In my opinion, Karin Slaughter's Grant County series is quite good, although I personally find her Will Trent series to be even better. This particular book serves as evidence of that.
The story revolves around Sarah, a medical examiner who finds herself on a murder scene. However, things take a bizarre turn when her pregnant sister, who had accompanied her to the scene, wanders off and is violently attacked. I have to admit, it seems a bit far-fetched. But hold on, it gets even more unbelievable. Lena, a former detective who used to work with Jeffery (the lead detective on the case and Sarah's ex-husband), coincidentally happens to be working as a security guard at the nearby college and clumsily tries to conduct her own investigation. It's clear that she can't even handle her own troubled life after a brutal attack she endured a year ago.
Now, don't get me wrong, Karin Slaughter is an incredibly talented writer. However, this installment in the series felt scattered and not up to her usual standard. I do think she managed to pull it together towards the end, leaving us with a jaw-dropping ending that made me go "what the heck," hence the four-star rating. Nevertheless, some of the characters in this book are becoming quite absurd. I hope Slaughter reigns in the melodramatic dialogue between these three characters and gets back on track with the next book in the series.
As mentioned earlier, everyone involved in the audiobook of 'A Faint Cold Fear' delivered a fantastic performance. Ms. Slaughter keeps you completely engrossed and the narration is spot-on. I applaud the team for their excellent work and eagerly await the release of Ms. Slaughter's next book.
