Summary
A Grief Observed is C. S. Lewis's honest reflection on the fundamental issues of life, death, and faith in the midst of loss. This is a beautiful and unflinchingly honest record of how even a stalwart believer can lose all sense of meaning in the universe, and how he can gradually regain his bearings.
If I was expecting a review that actually discussed the book 'A Grief Observed', I would have assumed it would be clear from the title. What I really wanted was the authentic book written by C.S. Lewis.
My son, who is only 9 years old, has been fighting Stage 4 cancer for the past 5 years. From his perspective, his life has been full of wonder and beauty. But as a parent, I have witnessed the never-ending struggles and the countless days spent in the hospital. Like Lewis, the author of this book, I am also a Catholic. I have desperately pleaded with God, over and over again, for relief. Reading Lewis' account of his own pain was incredibly therapeutic for me. It brought a sense of peace as I prepare myself for the inevitable loss of my son. I know that I won't be spared from the heartache, but Lewis has provided a connection in our shared experience of heartbreak, and it has helped me find solace for my soul.
It's so raw, so real, so reflective of true feelings that come through tragedy and are not glossed over through the lens of time, reflection and pride before they are written. A honestly human account.
