Summary
In Theodore Dreiser's classic portrait of the dark side of the American dream, Clyde Griffiths finds his social-climbing aspirations and love for a rich and beautiful debutante threatened when his lower-class pregnant girlfriend gives him an ultimatum.
I couldn't make it through the initial twelve chapters. The narration is solid, but the plot moves at a sluggish pace and the writing lacks variation. Ugh, not my thing at all.
The novel delves deep into the significance of having a positive role model in one's life. It sheds light on how the lack of guidance can shape someone into becoming a less desirable person, as seen through the main character's transformation into a jerk due to his limited understanding.
However, the book's writing style can be likened to a collection of examples found in a grammar textbook. Even during moments of intense emotion, the author employs convoluted sentence structures like, for instance, "the girl whom he had previously denied killing, and whom he felt immense guilt towards, was also the kind of girl that..." This choice of language leaves much to be desired.
