Summary

Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, husbands and wives. Like other great quests in literature, Lyman Ward's investigation leads him deep into the dark shadows of his own life. The result is a deeply moving novel that, through the prism of one family, illuminates the American present against the fascinating background of its past.

  • Angle of Repose offers a genuine portrayal of the wild western frontier depicted with the warmth and vivid imagery that I'm discovering are characteristic of Stegner's writing. He has the ability to transport you to another time, immersing you fully in the past. You can practically experience the sights, sounds, and textures. By the time I finished reading this book, I had developed a genuine connection with the characters and locations, as if they were real memories. The cherry on top was the outstanding narration by Mark Bramhall, which added an extra layer of perfection to the overall experience.
  • This audiobook, "Angle of Repose," is an exquisite and captivating exploration of marriage, motherhood, and friendship. Although the narrative unfolds in a bygone era, it remains incredibly relevant and relatable in modern times. While it may not be a joyful tale, it presents a gritty and authentic depiction of life. I must admit, I was pleasantly taken aback to discover that this masterpiece was penned by a male author, as his perspective is truly remarkable. Furthermore, the narrator's performance was exceptional, further enhancing the overall experience.
  • I absolutely loved reading this book, as it resonated with me on various levels. The narrative structure, with a story set in the 1970s alongside one in the late 1880s, captivated me. The protagonist, a retired and disabled professor from Berkley, is not only struggling to write a history of his grandparents' lives but also reflecting on his own journey. As someone interested in genealogy, I was drawn to the historical aspect of the story and the narrator's mission to document his family's history. The book also touched me on an emotional level, particularly in its exploration of relationships and the power dynamics between the narrator's grandparents. The portrayal of his grandmother's ambitions and the societal expectations placed on her marriage and husband felt remarkably relevant. Although I have occasionally questioned the Pulitzer Prize's choices in the past, this time I wholeheartedly believe the accolades are well-deserved.
