Summary

When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables send for a boy orphan to help them out at their farm, they mistakenly get Anne Shirley, a feisty, independent, but warm-hearted eleven-year-old girl. Fortunately, her sunny nature and quirky imagination win the hearts of her reluctant foster parents and everyone in the community. But not a day goes by without some memorable adventure or prank in the tragicomedy of her life. Early on, for example, she accidentally dyes her "cursed" red hair green. Later, in an effort to impress a neighbor she bakes a cake, but with liniment instead of vanilla.

  • I had never gotten around to reading this book or watching the TV series, but a buddy of mine recommended it, so I gave it a shot. Let me tell you, it turned out to be a delightful and heartwarming tale! And the narration was absolutely amazing!
  • I only picked up this book because I wanted to show my wife some love. Honestly, I had no expectations and thought it would be the most mindless, girly book ever. Surprisingly, it wasn't. I actually had a great time reading it. After finishing the story, I realized just how emotionally draining it must be to be Anne Shirley. It gave me a new perspective and helped me understand my wife better. Now I understand why she's always emotionally exhausted.
  • As someone who has been a fan of this series for as long as I can remember, it's difficult for me to not give it a perfect 5-star rating. While I do appreciate Rachel McAdams, her narration skills for the audiobook were not up to par. It felt as though I was sitting in the library, listening to a well-meaning volunteer attempting to read the book aloud. Thankfully, there is an alternative version available for a mere $0.95, narrated by another actress. I think it's worth giving that one a shot.
  • Even from the sample, you can tell that McAdams' voice is smooth and clear, and it's a perfect fit for this book. She effortlessly glides through the narration, bringing Anne to life with excitement and Marilla Cuthbert with a stern somberness. Her voice is crisp and bright in your earphones, or it can become a lovely lullaby to help you drift off to sleep at night. As for the story itself, if you don't already have a personal connection to it from your childhood, it might come across as a bit dull. By today's standards, at least. It's about a young orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to live with an older brother and sister. They decide to keep her, and then life just unfolds from there. But despite its lack of modern thrills, it still possesses a refreshing charm, making it a classic delight for the whole family. Just don't expect any dramatic climaxes or thrilling twists throughout the novel. Instead, embrace the enchantment of the story for what it truly is. So kick back, relax, and enjoy the ride.
  • Rachel's voice has such great intonation and inflections, it's clear that she really connects with the story. And now, after listening, I feel the same way. Thanks so much for the awesome service!
  • I snagged this gem during a sweet deal when it was available for free on the platform. It's a delightful tale that has stood the test of time, oozing with charm and heart. The narration is on point, bringing the story to life in a truly enjoyable way.
  • Good actors don't always mean good narrators. The reading style ranges from overly forced and saccharine to a straightforward delivery with incorrect inflections. Despite being set in Prince Edward Island, Canada, there is no discernible Canadian accent. The most disappointing aspect is that Anne's voice sounds more like that of a late teenager or someone in their twenties, rather than an 11 to 14-year-old. I'm uncertain if other narrators are any better, so I'll likely switch to the print version to complete the story.
