  • I've read/listened to all the Joe Pickett books, which are some of the best stories set in the modern Wild West (I'm also a big fan of Longmire). I was really excited to discover another series that brought to life the people and wildlife I've encountered during my trips to Green River Lakes and Yellowstone. However, this book was quite disappointing. Both the author and the narrator had an unpolished and amateurish vibe, which makes me wonder how it passed the editing process and got published. The Plot: This book (and the series in general) seemed to be trying too hard. Character flaws are more impactful when portrayed with subtlety and depth. When a character comes across as canned or stereotyped, they feel forced and inauthentic. This issue was present in the main character, the older girl, and other supporting characters. CJ Box appeared to struggle in creating these darker protagonists, pushing the boundaries of logic and believability. Most of the characters lacked the necessary development to make them believable. The twist in the antagonist's motives was meant to be an exciting plot twist, but there were no hints throughout the story to create a sense of suspicion. It ended up feeling too far-fetched. The Narrator: Similar to my previous point, the narrator seemed inexperienced. In the first half of the book, he overacted the dialogue, reminiscent of a high school drama class. He relied too heavily on a choppy and halting delivery, which became irritating. The emotions were too intense and lacked subtlety. Fortunately, he improved slightly as the story progressed. If you're eager to explore CJ Box's other works and witness his brilliant storytelling, you'll eventually find something worthwhile. However, this attempt at creating a stark contrast to Joe Pickett, with deep and multi-dimensional characters, fell short. Real people have nuances and shades of gray.
  • This Western tale is fantastic, featuring characters with a contemporary twist. The fact that Cody has imperfections and shows vulnerability is something I appreciate. The majority of the characters felt realistic, although I do find it slightly unusual that the 14-year-old Gracie seems more mature in her thoughts and observations than usual. Nevertheless, I had a great time overall!
  • How can this author write in such a way you cringe waiting for the other shoe to fall see such lovely county and ordinary people then cloud your detective skills and have a hero with so many character flaws in such twisted word painted pictures WOW what a book
  • Quite a lot of cliche and silly decisions on the part of various characters, and the real action of the story is limited to the final discs. That said, it flowed right along and kept my interest. Not thrilling enough to be a "thriller" but still an adventure and a mystery.
  • The story was decent but I found I had a hard time listening to it as I did not like the main character. He was gruff, rude and seem to take advantage of his friends and others who tried to help him out. If the author was trying to invoke sympathy for this character, he did not succeed.
