  • Emily, also known as Emma, is a young woman who has faced numerous challenges in her life. From dealing with a terrible mother to the loss of her father, she has managed to survive it all. The abuse she endured in book 1 was truly unbearable, and book 2 picks up a few months later. Despite the odds stacked against her, she manages to survive her aunt's attack and attempted murder, although she is left broken and devastated. However, Emma is skilled at putting on a facade, fooling everyone around her. In a spur-of-the-moment decision driven by a fear of abandonment, she chooses to live with her mother. Unfortunately, this decision proves to be disastrous as her mother's alcoholism destroys any chance of reconnection. Emma hangs on, trying to build a relationship with her mother while also enduring the abuse she inflicts. Throughout all her struggles, Evan and Sarah remain by her side, offering their love and support, ultimately saving her from herself. Emma forms an unusual connection with her mother's boyfriend, which proves to be both a blessing and a curse. However, due to her vulnerability and brokenness, she struggles to make wise decisions about their friendship. As for the ending, it is incredibly heart-wrenching, leaving a lasting impact on the reader. This book is undoubtedly deserving of a 5-star rating. The writing is beautifully executed, filled with vivid imagery that truly captivates. Ms. Donovan showcases her talent as a skilled writer. However, it is worth noting that the use of "scorn" as a verb without an object, which is common in American English, can be a bit clumsy. When it comes to the narration, Kate Rudd is in a league of her own, alongside Kate Reading. She is undeniably gifted, delivering an excellent and outstanding performance. Simply put, there aren't enough superlatives to describe her talent. She deserves a rating of 6 stars!
