Summary

From the moment she uttered the brave and honest words, "I am an alcoholic," to interviewer George Stephanopoulos, Elizabeth Vargas began writing her story, as her experiences were still raw. Now, in BETWEEN BREATHS, Vargas discusses her accounts of growing up with anxiety-which began suddenly at the age of six when her father served in Vietnam-and how she dealt with this anxiety as she came of age, to her eventually turning to alcohol for relief. She tells of how she found herself living in denial, about the extent of her addiction and keeping her dependency a secret for so long. She addresses her time in rehab, her first year of sobriety, and the guilt she felt as a working mother who had never found the right balance.

  • This addiction memoir is hands down the best one I've come across. The author really resonated with me and shared my own experiences. It's a must-read for sure. I honestly didn't have high hopes, considering the author had only been sober for two years, but she surpassed all my expectations. If you or someone close to you struggles with alcoholism, this book is a must-read.

  • I really connected with this deeply emotional memoir that was beautifully narrated by the author herself. Seeing her on TV for all those years made hearing her personal journey all the more inspiring.
  • Big ups to you, Elizabeth, for putting your story out there. I gotta say, listening to your journey of fighting through tough times, hitting rock bottom, and eventually coming out on top, really made me reflect on my own life. May the man upstairs watch over you and keep you strong in those AA meetings. Mad respect, and keep on shining.
  • Elizabeth Vargas, your courage in opening up and sharing your personal journey is truly commendable. This devastating illness has affected my family in unimaginable ways, having claimed the lives of my father, my only sister, and now my niece's life hangs precariously in the balance. When I was just five years old, our family was torn apart by the destructive force of alcoholism. My sister was disowned by our family, and her life was completely consumed by this insidious disease. Now, my precious niece is suffering immeasurably as she is abandoned by her children and husband, all due to the ravages of alcoholism. Her health is in an extremely compromised state. I downloaded your book while on vacation in Hawaii, and I was absolutely captivated from start to finish. Through your powerful storytelling, I could vividly visualize and empathize with the pain you experienced from every perspective. Your narration was not only easy on the ears, but it also had a mesmerizing quality, with perfect inflection and cadence. I sincerely hope that you will continue to be brave and generous in sharing your story. It has inspired me to consider writing my own family's story. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
  • Wow, I could never have fathomed the extent of her experiences. This memoir is absolutely incredible. The author bares her soul, and that deserves so much respect. She didn't have to do that, but she did. Her intelligence, humor, and resilience shine through beautifully. It's hard to imagine anyone else narrating this book with the same authenticity. The way she shares all the turmoil she's faced feels like listening to a firsthand account of her own life. That must have been an incredibly challenging task.
