Summary
Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard, takes on a case as a favor to his friend Thomas-a vampire of dubious integrity-only to become the prime suspect in a series of ghastly murders. From the Paperback edition.
I found the book to be quite captivating, although I must admit that I have come across some of the author's other novels that were more enthralling. There were instances while reading this book where I felt the urge to skip ahead. Personally, I truly wish the protagonist would find himself a girlfriend. It's quite astonishing how frequently he gets beaten up and injured throughout the story. Despite all the hardships, he manages to come out on top, albeit bruised and exhausted. It makes me wonder why the hero always seems to get into these intense situations. If he keeps getting into trouble, there's a chance he might not make it and the series would come to an end. On the bright side, the narrator did a fantastic job, as always. Additionally, we get to learn more about the protagonist's past, which is quite intriguing. There were some pleasant surprises and some not-so-great ones in the book.
I can't believe I didn't try the Harry Dresden series earlier, but better late than never. Although I missed the first 5 books, 'Blood Rites: The Dresden Files, Book 6' does a great job of filling in the gaps and making it easy to jump right into book number 7. This novel is packed with action, mystery, magic, vampires, and humor, creating the perfect recipe for an enjoyable read. The narrator is spot-on, nailing the witty remarks and adding to the overall enjoyment. Harry, the wizard for hire, finds himself in some sticky situations, adding depth to the gripping storyline. The side characters are a fascinating bunch, and it's exciting to see them evolve and develop as the series progresses. I can't wait to dive into more of these books, although I must admit I'm a little scared because listening to this one was an absolute blast.
I'm stoked that all the Dresden Files books are now available as audio! James Marsters totally kills it in Blood Rites, bringing the humor and nailing all the different character voices. There are some awesome character reveals in this one, and I've grown seriously invested in Harry and his crew.
