The plot is set in the 1980s in the Italian Riviera. Elio Perlman is seventeen years of age and is an intelligent boy. He is the son of an open-minded scholar. Oliver is a twenty-four-year-old scholar who has come to live in their mansion for six weeks. His purpose of the visit is to revise his manuscript document. During these six weeks, Elio falls for Oliver. The story sketches how they disclosed their feelings and fell for each other and then part ways again though being emotionally connected for the rest of their lives.
