Summary
It was just a godforsaken mountainside, but no place on earth was richer in silver. For a bustling, enterprising America, this was the great bonanza. The dreamers, the restless, the builders, the vultures-they were lured by the glittering promise of instant riches and survived the brutal hardships of a mining camp to raise a legendary boom town. But some sought more than wealth. Val Trevallion, a loner haunted by a violent past. Grita Redaway, a radiantly beautiful actress driven by an unfulfilled need. Two fiercely independent spirits, together they rose above the challenges of the Comstock to stake a bold claim on the future.
This book has a fair share of poorly written content, which reminds me of fan fiction found on the internet. The dialogue feels stiff and burdened with excessive explanations. The plot itself has numerous gaps, inconsistencies, and unrealistic elements. Moreover, there are an abundance of coincidences that occur throughout the story, making it seem unlikely in such a vast and empty country that the same individuals continuously cross paths. One character even tries to escape to Paris, but even there, the power of coincidence persists.
However, it does become more engaging after a sluggish beginning. It's best to approach this book with modest expectations.
This book was a thrilling and skillfully crafted read. The story unfolded seamlessly from start to finish. The highlight for me was the captivating encounter between Val and Greta at both the opening and closing of the book.
This is one hell of a well-crafted story.
L’Amour once again transports you to the rugged terrain of the Old West, immersing you in a world where you can practically taste the dust and hear the echo of gunshots.
If you're a die-hard fan, you're gonna eat this one up.
I actually reside in the exact location where the story unfolds, and I must say that the narrator does have a bit of trouble pronouncing certain names correctly. However, it's not a big deal and doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment.
The narration in 'Comstock Lode' is top-notch. The characters and subplots are truly captivating. Even though you might have an inkling about the outcome, the journey that the author takes you on is always a delightful rollercoaster. It's an absolute blast from start to finish.
I absolutely adore all of Louis L'Amour's stories, but this particular one really stood out! The plot had some incredible surprises and interconnections that had me hooked from start to finish.
This audiobook had me on the edge of my seat, and there were several occasions when I found myself sitting in my car in the carport for at least 15 minutes just to listen to a little more.
This book is a must-read for everyone. After my visit to Virginia City this year, I decided to read it and it truly brought the story to life. It instantly became one of my favorites! The narration is fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed the diverse range of character portrayals.
