Summary
RITA Award-winning author Kresley Cole continues her bestselling Immortals After Dark series with this electrifying tale of a ruthless demon mercenary and the lovely young halfling who enchants him.
Believe all the hype about Robert Petkoff, I didn't at first, but I absolutely do now! He was incredible, hilarious, and brought this book to life!
The story follows Cadeon Woede as he embarks on a mission to retrieve a powerful sword that was created to kill a specific immortal – the same immortal who took Cadeon's brother Rydstrom's kingdom. Cadeon has been blamed for the loss, and for the past 900 years, he has been trying to make amends.
Imagine Cadeon's dilemma when he discovers that the price for the sword is his destined mate, Holly Ashwin. In order to reclaim Rydstrom's kingdom, Cadeon would have to trade Holly for the sword. What's a demon to do?
Out of all the Immortals After Dark books I've recently listened to, this one was refreshingly straightforward. I wasn't overwhelmed by numerous characters from the Lore; instead, the focus was primarily on the demon Cadeon and a Harpy, with a few other supernatural beings making occasional appearances.
Cadeon's character was a perfect blend of humor, sarcasm, roughness, and sweetness. Holly's OCD added an interesting layer to the story, but what I loved most was how everyone accepted her quirks and worked with her. I admired Holly's journey of finding her place where she truly belonged and discovering her inner strength. She took all that Cadeon taught her and fought for her own survival. I was truly impressed by both Holly and Cadeon.
I can't wait to unravel the mystery of why Rydstrom has That Woman in chains!
This book is wicked and steamy, with an incredible narrator who brings the story to life. Robert Petkoff's skillful narration is the key ingredient here and I truly admire his talent!
The author has done a fantastic job of expanding the story and providing rich details throughout. I never found it to be excessively long or dull. The journey she takes the reader on is truly enjoyable. I wouldn't change a single thing.
However, when it comes to the characters, there's something that I can't quite put my finger on. I feel like the hero could have been stronger and more powerful, especially in his relationship with Holly. But overall, I still enjoyed their dynamic together. And I particularly loved witnessing Holly's transformation from a weak, nerdy girl into a strong and formidable Valkyrie.
