Summary

Jack Ryan, the former president of the United States, is out of office, but not out of the loop about his brainchild, the "Campus" - a highly effective, counter-terrorism organization that operates outside the Washington hierarchy. But what Ryan doesn't know is that his son, Jack Ryan, Jr., has joined his cousins, Brian and Dominic Caruso, at the shadowy Campus. While a highly effective analyst, young Ryan hungers for the action of a field agent.

  • I had issues with the characters and their various settings, as well as understanding their contributions to the overall story. Certain sections of the book were excessively verbose, but on the whole, the plot was gripping and genuinely frightening. The narration by Phillips was commendable, although I hope he can eventually match the level of polish displayed by G. Guidell.
  • As someone who has been a fan of Clancy for a while, I must admit that I was let down by this story. The author has a tendency to oversimplify complex issues to fit the needs of his characters. He promotes the idea that torture is effective and necessary, criticizes the complicated and flawed tax system, and suggests that eliminating our enemies should be the foundation of American foreign policy, among other misconceptions. Maybe it's because I was younger when I read Clancy's other works that I didn't realize the cynical and simplistic undertones in his writing. It's possible that Mr. Clancy now sees the world in terms of good versus evil. Overall, I cannot recommend this book.
  • Lou Diamond Philips delivers a brilliant performance in 'Dead or Alive', leaving me excited for more of his work. However, I can't say the same for Tom Clancy. Ever since the USSR collapsed, his writing hasn't been the same. While the story was decent, it didn't live up to his previous bestsellers, though it did surpass some of his recent works. One aspect that really bothered me was his insertion of right wing politics, except for one instance. It was irritating to see his pandering portrayal of the Saudi royal family and the insinuation that the Democratic Party is more corrupt and "ungodly". This was insulting to all Americans and quite disappointing coming from him. I'm genuinely surprised and curious as to the reasoning behind this, but it's important to call him out on it. It seems like he conveniently uses 9/11 for personal gain, without actually learning anything from it.
