Summary
While the world seems to be in love with the idea of tiny houses and minimalism, real women with real families who are constantly growing and changing simply can't purge it all and start from nothing. Yet a home with too much stuff is a home that is difficult to maintain, so where do we begin? Add in paralyzing emotional attachments and constant life challenges, and it can feel almost impossible to make real decluttering progress.
I really dig her idea of the container method, however, I reckon it might take a bit longer than Marie Kondo's approach. This book really resonates with folks who have a ton of aspirations that end up cluttering their space, and maybe also with those who have a penchant for hoarding everything. That particular aspect of the book didn't quite do it for me, though. What really sealed the deal for me and made me think this book deserves a solid five-star rating was the ending. The author delves into the realm of emotional clutter, breaking it down into different sections and addressing all the challenges that come with decluttering from an emotional standpoint. It helped me gain some insight into my own feelings and it hit me in a way that none of Marie's books have managed to do. The writing style is quirky and fun, and the author managed to bring some laughter into the mix. All in all, a job well done!
I really appreciate that the author herself narrates this audiobook, and Dana offers some excellent decluttering ideas.
However, if you're familiar with Dana's YouTube videos or blog posts, you'll find that the content of the book is repetitive. She covers concepts like containers, clutter thresholds, and starting with trash and easy items. She goes through each room, reiterating the same information. It seems like this book is mainly targeted towards individuals with extremely cluttered homes. If you're just an average person looking to reduce your belongings in a moderately tidy home, I suggest checking out YouTube or blogs instead.
Unlike other audiobooks, this one lacks chapter titles and has incorrect chapter numbers. For instance, chapter 3 is labeled as chapter 6, making it challenging to follow along. As someone who struggles to focus on audiobooks, this is a major annoyance for me. Chapter titles help me stay engaged and remember the topics discussed. It also becomes confusing when she refers to chapter 3, but it's actually chapter 6.
Overall, the ideas in the book are valuable, but I believe it could have been more concise.
I've gone through my fair share of books and audiobooks, but let me tell you, this book easily makes it into my top 5. It's hands down one of the most impactful books I've come across in years. Now, I'm a big fan of organizing, but I've always struggled with deciding what to get rid of. I've tried different approaches, but they only made a small dent in my clutter. However, with Dana's guidance, I was able to clear out a whopping 100% of certain containers.
I purchased this book with the expectation of finding practical strategies to streamline my life and tackle the typical clutter that accumulates. However, as I delved into the content, I noticed that it primarily caters to individuals dealing with significant clutter challenges. It seems more suitable for those featured on shows like Hoarders. The author's mention of having an emotional attachment to expired food, particularly the instance with blueberry pie filling, pushed me to my breaking point and prompted me to write this review. My only remorse is that I am unable to physically declutter my space by tossing this book into a black trash bag and purging it. But there's no need to feel guilty about it.
If you're someone who always finds themselves putting things off, struggling to keep things organized, and unintentionally accumulating too much stuff, then this book is for you. Dana provides a set of straightforward steps that can be applied to every room in your house, and let me tell you, they work wonders! This audiobook is perfect to listen to while you tackle your clutter. Dana's words will motivate you to declutter as you learn valuable strategies for managing your belongings. Having read numerous books on decluttering, I can confidently say that THIS BOOK is a must-read for anyone dealing with clutter.
As a father with three children, I was starting to feel incredibly stressed by the excessive clutter accumulating in our household. However, after reading this book, I genuinely believe it can make a difference. On numerous occasions, I found myself thinking, "Phew! Finally, someone who understands my struggle. It's a constant battle to let go of items that could potentially be useful in the future. If the author can overcome it, perhaps I can as well. Heck, why not give it a shot?"
