I have a guilty pleasure for The Walking Dead books. You know, those books that don't have much literary value but are just enjoyable to listen to. However, 'Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny' doesn't even fit into my guilty pleasure category! It's actually quite embarrassing how much I enjoyed it. Holly Madison, the author, is extremely self-absorbed and she talks about herself for hours in this memoir. She was never my favorite 'Girl Next Door', and now I see her as someone who tries to make herself look better by wearing makeup and getting a breast augmentation, but ultimately lacks substance. It's disappointing how she criticizes almost everyone she used to advance her career. However, I can't deny that I enjoyed all the nonsense she talked about! Holly and I are around the same age (or at least that's what she claims), so this pop culture phenomenon is from my generation. I had my own experiences as a Hooters Girl and a swimsuit model, so I related to her descriptions of her early days. That's why I always found 'Girl Next Door' entertaining. We were living similar lifestyles, just on a much bigger scale! I eventually grew out of that scene and moved on, so this book transported me back to a time and place that will never exist again. I really enjoyed that aspect and I appreciate Holly for providing that instant time machine. However, I have to say that I have lost all respect for her after reading this book. Throughout the book, she tries to portray herself as a victim, but her manipulative nature always shines through. She constantly blames others for her own bad choices, which is reminiscent of a middle school girl. Just take responsibility for your actions, girl! Additionally, it's in poor taste for someone our age to speak about others the way she does throughout the book. And don't get me started on her attempts at using a fake English accent to introduce each chapter. It's cringe-worthy and embarrassing. Despite all of this, if you have any curiosity about this lifestyle, you won't regret using your book credit on this.
If you're looking to pursue a career as a bunny, this book is definitely a must-read. It sheds light on the fact that the grass isn't always greener or as glamorous as it seems on the other side.
