Summary
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October, 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world.
This book tells an incredible story about an extraordinary man, Shackleton. It's so captivating that any fictional attempt to replicate it would fall short in terms of reliability. I highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed reading this book, although it did take me a little while to get into it. The reason is that I found "Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World" by Jennifer Armstrong to be more captivating.
This book provides a very detailed and comprehensive overview of the expedition. In comparison, "Shipwreck" has a more cinematic and poetic style, while this book feels more like a documentary. It was fascinating to delve deeper into the true story of this incredible adventure.
My only critique is that the book can be a bit dry at times, which is somewhat expected given its historical nature. However, the narration was fantastic and managed to engage me despite the book's text.
I have to say, 'Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage' is one heck of a remarkable and touching tale about bravery, perseverance, and the unbreakable bond of brotherhood. The title itself couldn't be more fitting, as it truly captures the unparalleled endurance displayed by these individuals amidst seemingly insurmountable challenges and constant uncertainty. I was genuinely moved to tears by the conclusion of this narrative. It shares many similarities with other captivating books like 'Into Thin Air' and 'Shadow Divers'.
The narration of this audiobook was absolutely spot-on, keeping me engaged throughout the entire journey with a genuine display of emotions. I cannot recommend it enough.
This book is a stunningly written account of an extraordinary and unimaginable journey. It's hard to fathom the incredible hardships these individuals endured, and the fact they all survived to recount their experiences is truly remarkable. Reading this book felt like being transported alongside them throughout their entire harrowing ordeal. If you're a fan of gripping survival tales, this one will blow your mind.
The narrator did an excellent job bringing the story to life.
This book has an absolutely incredible and true story. I have listened to hundreds of books, and the casting of the voice and the story in this one is possibly the best I've ever come across. It's definitely at the top of my list.
This is an absolutely captivating story that is expertly narrated by Simon Prebble. Once I reached the midpoint of the first part, I couldn't put it down and found myself completely engrossed. Prebble's narration is truly enthralling.
Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage is a slow-paced audiobook that may not be everyone's cup of tea. The initial chapters do capture some intrigue as they delve into the preparations required for an adventurous and dangerous undertaking. However, once the danger strikes, the narrative becomes a repetitive account of mundane details such as food stocks, weather, and ice conditions. There are occasional interpersonal conflicts that add some spice, but unfortunately, the matter-of-fact delivery by the reader fails to generate much interest in the story. Personally, I found it quite challenging to continue listening to the audiobook, as it felt like torture to endure the constant updates on which dogs, seals, and penguins would meet their demise. While I understand that survival in harsh conditions can be tough, this book seems to drain any sense of adventure that one might have anticipated.
