Summary

In Extreme Ownership, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin share hard-hitting, Navy SEAL combat stories that translate into lessons for business and life. With riveting first-hand accounts of making high-pressure decisions as Navy SEAL battlefield leaders, this book is equally gripping for leaders who seek to dominate other arenas. Jocko and Leif served together in SEAL Task Unit Bruiser, the most highly decorated Special Operations unit from the war in Iraq. Their efforts contributed to the historic triumph for U.S. forces in Ramadi. Through those difficult months of sustained combat, Jocko, Leif and their SEAL brothers learned that leadership--at every level--is the most important thing on the battlefield. They started Echelon Front to teach these same leadership principles to companies across industries throughout the business world that want to build their own high-performance, winning teams.

  • I really liked listening to Extreme Ownership. The principles were explained in a clear way, and the examples from both the business world and the battlefield helped me grasp their significance and relevance. Huge thanks to Jocko and Leif for sharing their valuable and well-earned wisdom.
  • I haven't written a review before, but I want to start by acknowledging the authors and their commitment in the service. However, I feel that this book takes advantage of the mystique surrounding the SEAL teams. The business advice provided is quite obvious and seems to repeat the same few clichés multiple times. Additionally, it is clear that the authors have a limited understanding of business and financial concepts, which is understandable given their background. I must admit, I'm surprised that either of these individuals (who are not authors) would lack such intelligence, or maybe CEOs are simply attracted to the idea of glamorizing service without considering its value. Kudos to you guys for taking advantage of people's ignorance and the celebrity status of the SEALs.
  • This book contains valuable insights that can greatly enhance your life. However, in order to access these gems, you'll have to wade through excessive content emphasizing the book's importance. The frequent repetition of phrases like "The lessons you'll learn in the book will..." gives it the feel of an extended infomercial. As a reader who has already purchased and is actively reading the book, I don't need further persuasion. I simply crave the substance, and I can assess its value on my own. Therefore, the lengthy and repetitive self-review passages within the book made it quite tedious to listen to.
  • Having served in the military myself, I must say that I cannot dispute the significance of the leadership principles outlined in this book. However, I do feel that the concepts could have been explored in greater detail. It felt like the book only scratched the surface by providing just one example of how each concept can be applied in both combat and business settings.
  • This audiobook is straightforward, to the point, and organized effectively. Each chapter kicks off with a captivating anecdote from a battle, which is then followed by a clearly defined principle or valuable lesson learned. This is further reinforced by real-life stories from the business world that demonstrate how these principles can be applied universally. Being a small business owner myself, I can easily identify how these principles can be implemented to enhance my clients' experience, achieve better results, and ultimately increase overall satisfaction.
  • Out of the hundreds of business books I've read, "Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win" definitely ranks in the top three and is probably my favorite. It's captivating, intriguing, and packed with practical lessons that can be applied to real life. I highly recommend this book to both my friends and clients, but I suggest listening to it instead of reading it. It's easily the best audiobook I've ever come across, with the author's narration adding an extra layer of brilliance.
  • Jocko's narration had a consistent issue where the beginning of each sentence sounded like it was cut off. I listened to the audiobook using Bluetooth headphones and even tried using the iPhone 6s speakers to double-check. It's hard to find a more accurate description of the problem. There was a scratchy, incomplete start to every sentence after a noticeable pause, missing the first half of the first word. However, Leif's sections were not affected by this issue and were delivered as expected. Despite the narration problem, it is still worth getting.
