Fifty Shades of Grey: Book One (Fifty Shades Trilogy) by EL James is an erotic romance novel first published in 2011. It is the first installment of the Fifty Shades Trilogy series. The story opens with the protagonist Anastasia Steele (commonly referred to as Anna), who steps in for her friend Katherine Kavanaugh to interview the powerful and billionaire businessman Christian Grey for an article for the school newspaper. Anastasia does not know anything about Christian Grey except the fact that he is rich and donates to the university.Anna is surprised upon meeting Christian. He is young, handsome and an intense personality. Christian finds Anna attractive and starts pursuing her. He starts following her, showing up at her workplace, rescuing her from a drunk evening etc. He showers expensive gifts on her. Finally, Chrisitan opens up to Anna and tells his truth as a sexual deviant to her. He is into BDSM and likes to dominate the women into submission.
He wants Anna to be his sexual slave. He asks her to sign a contract where she has to follow a set of rules as specified in the contract and the breach of these rules will have punishment. The contract clarifies that they will have a purely sexual relationship and not a romantic one. Anna is not allowed to touch him or make eye contact with him. He also comes to know that Anna is a virgin.
Anna enters into this confusing and strange relationship with Christian. With the passage of time, she discovers the vagaries of such a relationship and gets to discover her compatibility with Christian.

It had sold more than 125 million copies worldwide by June 2015 and has been translated into 52 languages. It became the fastest selling paperback in the UK. The author has targeted mainly the female readers with this novel.Though the novel is not a literary classic, it is interesting and engaging for the readers. The author has tried to explore the female sexuality through the novel. The editing of the novel could have been tighter and the characters also could have been developed more to establish a better connection with the readers. Overall, it is a fun and interesting fiction read which taps into female sensuality and sexuality.
