Summary
Navy SEAL turned covert Homeland Security operative Scot Harvath is called to action once again in the hottest political thriller yet from #1 New York Times bestselling author Brad Thor. Buried within the black ops budgets of the Department of Defense, a new spy agency has been created. Unfettered by the oversight of self-serving politicians, it reports only to a secret panel of military insiders. Its job is to target America's enemies-both foreign and domestic-under a charter of three simple words: Find, Fix, and Finish.Recruited as a field operative, Scot Harvath has just returned from his first assignment abroad when a group of American college students is killed in a bombing in Rome. The evidence points to a dangerous colleague from Harvath's past and a plan for further attacks on an unimaginable scale. Harvath is tasked with leveraging his relationship to lure the man out of hiding and kill him on the spot. But what if he has the wrong man?Simultaneously, a young woman is struck by a Yellow taxi in a hit-and-run on Chicago's near west side. With only two intoxicated witnesses and more than 5,000 Yellow cabs in the city, the Chicago police have given up on their investigation. But when the family's attorney plunges into the underground cab community, he will uncover a shocking connection to the bombing in Rome and the perpetrators' plans for America. As the story rockets to its conclusion, the plots intersect in a race to prevent one of the most audacious and unthinkable acts of war in the history of mankind.
What a complete waste of my time.
I'll never be able to regain those hours I spent on this, before I eventually threw in the towel.
Let's start with the few positives - the action sequences were quite entertaining.
Now, onto the other 99% of the book -
If I had actually wanted to listen to a manual full of propaganda, flooded with oversimplified, inaccurate, and slanderous stereotypes, I would have been quite pleased.
If you happen to believe that democracy is some kind of socialist conspiracy, that the Constitution is just an inconvenience to mock, that the Marines should be replaced by mercenaries from Blackwater, if you've named your first child after Ayn Rand, and if you've written to the Vatican asking for the Koch Brothers to be declared saints, then this book might just be your cup of tea.
Personally, I was hoping for a gripping "thriller", not some kind of political brainwashing session.
This guy is really gonna give Mitch Rapp a challenge. It's not too excessive (well, at least in my opinion) and the way it's narrated is awesome. If you're into action-packed books where the bad guys get what they deserve and you don't have to do a lot of heavy thinking, then this is a solid pick for you.
The narrator did a solid job, the plot was engaging, but the book had untapped potential. For instance, when the author introduced the main character as a former professional athlete, it would have been more captivating if they had mentioned his three-year stint playing for the Yankees in triple A ball. The characters had the potential to be more vibrant, but unfortunately fell short.
The narrator of this audiobook is absolutely fantastic. The level of violence portrayed in the story feels realistic and not over-the-top. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for the next installment to be released on audio.
This book is really well-written, with a fantastic story that is completely enjoyable. It will definitely hold your interest from start to finish. Brad Thor is truly one of the top-notch authors out there!
I found this audiobook to be a breeze to listen to. The storyline was simple and the characters were straightforward. The author didn't delve too much into technical details about the weapons or tactics portrayed in the book. Overall, I thought this was an average effort from the writer. If you're looking for a recommendation, I would suggest checking out their earlier works instead.
