Orenstein does an impressive job of presenting the facts in a clinical yet engaging style. She delves into various aspects such as women's emotional and physical development, their sexuality, and society's perception and treatment of them. These factors have a significant impact, regardless of what we believe. I was completely engrossed in this book. Initially, I hesitated to share it with my 16-year-old daughters due to the explicit descriptions of sex in today's pornography early on. However, I realized that the portrayal of sex is not limited to pornography but is pervasive in almost every TV show and even commercials. It was a shocking revelation (and quite educational) to learn that most boys (and a considerable number of girls) rely on this unrealistic and degrading content to learn about sex. Orenstein's honest, realistic, and compassionate approach in presenting statistics, facts, and individual stories of the girls and women she interviewed creates a compelling read rather than a dry textbook. Consequently, I not only want my daughters to read it, but also my husband, sons, nieces, nephews, and everyone I know. In my opinion, it should be required reading for females and everyone else, irrespective of their gender, identity, or orientation. I could continue praising this book, but let me just say that it is truly exceptional.
This audiobook is absolutely incredible, it is a must-have resource that should be incorporated into the curriculum of every middle and high school across the nation.
I really enjoyed the perspective shared in this book. The different types of teenagers interviewed allowed me to connect with at least one of them. As parents, it's important for us to have more conversations with our children rather than just giving them lectures.
If only this book had been around back in the day, it would've totally helped me out. But even now, the concepts, facts, and personal stories have really opened my eyes to the whole topic of girls and sex. I seriously suggest giving it a listen!
Having grown up in a household where my mom was incredibly strong-willed and accomplished, I was conditioned to value a woman's perspective early on. As a result, I was quite taken aback by the explicit nature of the sexual content depicted in Orenstein's book. It seems like she is trying her best to frighten her readers. Now, I understand that you won't contract AIDS or sprout hair on your hands from masturbating, but you will likely face slut-shaming, and the hook-up culture prevalent on college campuses is often associated with rape culture. That's not exactly what Orenstein is stating, but the first seven chapters are filled with personal stories of her interviewees who have experienced unwanted sexual encounters, which inevitably leads to shame and guilt. It isn't until the eighth chapter that she finally delves into practical advice on sex education and self-discovery. While the entire book is definitely worth reading, I might consider reading chapter eight aloud to my thirteen-year-old, believing that I'm miles ahead of most American parents, according to Orenstein.
As a woman in her thirties who has encountered similar situations, I found this book to be incredibly impactful. What struck me even more was the responsibility I felt to ensure that my children have a fundamentally different understanding of sex compared to what is currently taught and portrayed in sex education classes, media, and pornography. I wholeheartedly endorse this book and firmly believe that it should be mandatory reading for middle school and high school students.
I really loved this book. Even though I'm not a parent or a teacher, I do mentor a teenage girl.
There are moments in this book where the content is quite challenging. However, as grown-ups, it's our responsibility to grasp the complex world that young people face today.
I decided to read this book after hearing a fascinating interview on Fresh Air. Now, I truly want to contribute to educating and empowering young individuals, helping them gain confidence and make informed choices.
Fingers crossed that this book sparks a revolution in sex education throughout our nation.
