Summary

  • The book was written and performed well, but it felt too basic for my liking, so I couldn't continue beyond the first few hours. The summary I read beforehand didn't mention that the author was a pastor or had a background in youth ministry. The overall tone of the book reminded me of typical youth sermons that try too hard to connect with pop culture and entertain an audience who might rather be elsewhere. I chose to download this book because I was interested in the subject matter, but I only found about 20 minutes of valuable content amidst two and a half hours of filler before I had to stop listening. It would probably be suitable for high school students who haven't had much leadership experience. I don't blame the author, as the foreword and advertising were completely misleading.
  • The book took a long time to get into the practical aspects of leading when you're not in charge. The author promises to get into the "how" in chapter 3, but ends up spending more time on the "why". Personally, I felt that the book focused too much on spiritual aspects rather than providing strictly professional guidance, which is what I was hoping for. I don't think it's worth your time, as there are other books available that can better help you lead with influence within an organization.
  • If you remove all the "God has a purpose for you" nonsense, there isn't much substance left. It was a struggle to get through all the preaching. If you're seeking a six-hour sermon, then this book is for you. But if you're looking for practical leadership tips, you're better off checking out the Spark notes.
