Summary
"The story of what Dakota did . . . will be told for generations."-President Barack Obama, from remarks given at Meyer's Medal of Honor ceremony
Dakota Meyer's tale displays immense bravery and unwavering determination. It is truly disheartening to hear about the administrative mishaps that led to the loss and injury of numerous dedicated individuals.
The writing style is straightforward, if a bit patriotic, but still acceptable.
Zach McLarty's performance as the narrator was cringe-worthy, with an exaggerated manner and a lack of familiarity with the subject matter. The story itself is already quite dramatic, and I can envision how a more skilled narrator like Scott Brick could have conveyed its simplicity and power. However, this is a subjective matter. What is truly unforgivable is Mr. McLarty's lack of preparation in portraying the subject accurately. For instance, "corpsman" should not have a pronounced "p". It may seem like a minor detail, but the essence of the book is to pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of these courageous individuals, both Afghan and American. Displaying respect entails putting in the minimal effort to present an accurate rendition.
Would you give Into the Fire: A Firsthand Account of the Most Insane Battle in the Afghan War another listen? What makes you want to listen to it again?
