Summary
In an uptown strip joint, a cop is found bludgeoned to death. The weapon's a baseball bat. The motive's a mystery. It's a case of serious overkill that pushes Eve Dallas straight into overdrive. Her investigation uncovers a private club that's more than a hot spot. Purgatory's a last chance for atonement where everyone is judged. Where your most intimate fate depends on your most intimate sins. And where one cop's hidden secrets are about to plunge innocent souls into vice-ridden damnation...
I absolutely adored the witty humor infused within the captivating murder mysteries unraveled in "Judgment in Death: In Death, Book 11." Additionally, the deep affection shared between Eve and Rork was truly heartwarming.
I'm absolutely blown away by J.D. Robb's incredible writing skills. Throughout the years, I've devoured every single installment in this series, and now I'm hooked on the fantastic narration provided by Susan Ericksen. Whether I'm reading or listening, I'm completely captivated by each story. The way the detective work is portrayed in this futuristic world is absolutely mind-boggling and I find myself completely engrossed in it.
I'm a huge fan of the stories, but what really sets this audiobook apart are the amazing characters Eve and Roarke. They truly make the whole experience fantastic! And let's not forget about Susan Erickson's incredible narration skills. She really knows how to bring these characters to life!
The story, as always, moves at a rapid pace and keeps the reader engaged. Nora Roberts proves once again that she is a master storyteller. However, the narrator falls short of being exceptional. While her portrayal of the main characters is satisfactory, the secondary characters come across as absurd. Peabody and McNab, for instance, remind me of characters from old cartoons rather than competent police officers. They lack the authenticity needed for me to trust them with a case. Additionally, the commander's voice sounds like he constantly has a throat full of phlegm. The only characters that feel remotely believable are Dallas, Roarke, and the strippers.
This book was a real drag compared to the rest of the series. It seemed to go on forever and didn't have the usual humor and charm that I love about the other books. Honestly, if you skip this one, you won't be missing out on anything.
I listened to this audiobook for the first time years ago, when it was abridged. Recently, I repurchased it at a 50% discount of around $10 to enjoy the full-length version and relive the series. This book was a big hit and actually prompted the author, Nora Roberts (also known as J.D. Robb), to publish the first book in the series in full length, kicking off the saga.
To fully experience the author's intended pace, I listened to it at 1.25x speed, which worked out great!
While this book is good, I wouldn't recommend starting the series with it. If you're new to the series, I suggest starting with my all-time favorite, book #1, or book #16, "Portrait in Death," which will bring you up to speed on the characters and background.
This story is very much in line with the typical style of the series, and it takes place after book 5.
I hope my comments were helpful!
This audiobook has an amazing plot that keeps you hooked, especially with the added element of relationship tension. It's quite interesting to see Roark's possessiveness emerge and witness their egos clash. I absolutely appreciate how they tackle challenges together, no matter what obstacles they face. Moreover, the interdepartmental stress adds depth to the story and gives us a glimpse of Eve's true character.
