Every book by O'Reilly has been outstanding, and this one is no different. It provides a concise account of certain aspects of World War II in the Pacific. Despite having already studied this subject extensively, I discovered numerous new insights while reading this book. One particularly shocking revelation was the occurrence of a catastrophic storm that resulted in the death of 900 individuals and the loss of 100 aircraft, as American planes were transporting American POWs out of Japan. This tragic event is often overlooked in the historical narrative of the conflict. I strongly believe that all young people should read this book to gain a better understanding of the rationale behind the decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan.
I was initially let down by the absence of Bill O'Reilly as the narrator, since I really like his voice. However, my disappointment quickly faded once I started listening. Robert Petkoff did an amazing job, and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance. The way O'Reilly and Dugard approached the historical period in which both sides were involved was outstanding. They didn't shy away from portraying the death and destruction caused by both sides. They also handled the dropping of the Atomic Bombs with great care. It was a necessary but horrifying event, and the authors handled it well. Overall, it was an engrossing listen that was hard to put down.
I couldn't stop listening. This book really opened my eyes. As a history major in college, with a focus on WWII, I was already familiar with a lot of the information presented here, but the level of research done is truly impressive. The writing style manages to be both engaging and easy to understand. Overall, it's a fantastic read with an excellent narrator.

It is not a recommended read for those who are easily disturbed, or for those who wish to avoid confronting the harsh realities of battling against a ruthless and malevolent adversary.

It provides a deeper understanding of Truman's difficult decision and sheds light on the incredible bravery and patriotism displayed by the men who fought in World War II. Overall, it is an awesome read.
I've been obsessed with World War II for a while now, trying to get a grasp on it. While I feel like I understand a lot about what happened in Europe, the war in the South Pacific has always been a bit of a mystery to me. This book really helped shed some light on why the Japanese decided to get involved in a war that ultimately pitted them against the United States. And let me tell you, it was not a good decision. Hirohito, just like Hitler, had an unwavering determination to keep fighting, even when the odds were stacked against him. The actions taken by the U.S. were necessary, but it's still hard to stomach. The silver lining, though, is that the U.S. helped Japan rebuild and ended up forming a strong friendship with them. I truly believe that our alliance with Japan has been a positive thing for both our nations. While I wasn't alive during WWII, I can honestly say that I haven't met a Japanese person I didn't like. Granted, I don't know many, but the friendships I do have mean a lot to me.
This book is absolutely fantastic! The narrator did an outstanding job with the performance. As someone who is quite keen on history, especially World War II, I was extremely intrigued to dive into this audiobook. I can't stress enough how much I recommend it to everyone.
