Summary

A nation born of angels, vast, intricate, and surrounded by danger; a woman born to servitude, unknowingly given access to the secrets of the realm; and a plot borne of evil, too cunning to be fathomed, too deadly to be known. These are the basis of this award-winning first entry in the fascinating Kushiel's Legacy series.

  • I stumbled upon Phedre and the start of Kushiel's tale by chance years ago. Some think it's just about sex, but there's so much more to it. The series consists of 6 books, and even after all these years, I find myself drawn back into its mesmerizing world. The culture in Terre D'Ange is heavily sexual, but it's crucial to grasp this aspect as you accompany the characters on their journeys of self-discovery, exploring the true meaning of love and the pursuit of it on their own terms within their unique world. The series is packed with captivating plots and unexpected turns. Just when you think it's about to conclude, you realize there's still more to come! I have the hardcover edition of the first book and the next two, but I eagerly await the completion of the whole series in audio format. I already have the audio versions for books 4, 5, and 6, and for the past few months, I've been repeatedly listening to them while eagerly anticipating the release of the remaining books. Although I haven't listened to the audio version of this particular story yet, I'm incredibly excited to reunite with a young Phedre and start the journey anew.
  • I attempted to read 'Kushiel's Dart' twice but found myself getting stuck at the same point both times. Hoping that listening to the audiobook would provide a fresh perspective, I gave it a try. However, I once again encountered the same obstacle and eventually had to stop listening. As of now, I have yet to resume. Honestly, I wish I could return it and reclaim my credit.
  • The beginning of the audiobook focuses heavily on sexually explicit content, particularly centered around masochism. It was so prominent that I almost stopped listening altogether. However, I persevered because I was gradually growing fond of the main character. Another aspect that bothered me was the overwhelming number of complex names of the characters, which made it challenging to keep track of everyone. Despite these issues, the story itself was captivating, and once I got past the initial four hours, I became completely engrossed. I'm really relieved that I stuck with it because the overall narrative was exceptional.
  • After completing the initial part, I found myself utterly uninterested to continue any further. To be frank, I believe I am displaying a great deal of leniency by awarding it a single star. As someone who devours science and fantasy fiction, I must confess that this ranks among the absolute worst I have encountered. However, credit must be given to the narrator, who certainly made a valiant effort.
  • I'm absolutely smitten with this book. Whether I have it in my hands or playing through my headphones, the experience is equally fantastic. It's opulent and mysterious, like indulging in a delectable piece of high-quality chocolate. The narrator does a stellar job, effortlessly bringing the characters to life with a diverse range of voices. However, I couldn't quite get past the fact that the narrator, Phaedra, had a British accent, considering the story is clearly set in an alternate version of France. It threw me off and some pronunciations differed from my expectations. Nevertheless, this rendition of the exceptional book is top-notch. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
  • I really wanted to enjoy this book, I swear. I've heard so many amazing things about it over the years. I attempted to read the physical copy a few times, but I quickly lost interest. However, after seeing all the positive reviews here, I decided to give it another shot. So, here I am, approximately 20 chapters into the story (out of 96), and the author still hasn't given me any reason to become emotionally invested in the fate of the main characters. Not the most promising start, I must say. Lately, I've been indulging in thrilling and action-packed narratives, and in comparison, this feels as exciting as watching golf on TV with my grandfather. I've reached a point where I don't even care about the wasted credit; I simply don't want to continue listening. It's truly disappointing.
  • I must admit, this purchase has been a huge letdown during my 8-year tenure as a customer. It is, without a doubt, the worst purchase I have ever made! The initial 8 hours of the audiobook solely focuses on the creation of sado-masochistic, bisexual, spy-prostitutes... Seriously, I could have done without that. It's such a shame because the world-building is actually quite impressive, and the political intrigues are well-crafted. However, the explicit S&M sexual scenes are just too much for me. It's like having a high-quality Kobe steak served alongside a deceased squirrel. And just to clarify, I did indeed listen to the entire audiobook.
  • This book was absolutely mind-blowing! It started off a bit challenging in the first two sections, with a flood of information and a plethora of names that made it difficult to keep track of everything. However, as you delve deeper into the story, you realize that the important characters become easier to remember. The love story woven throughout is simply marvelous, and I must say that the author's portrayal of the setting and time period is so unique that it's hard to pinpoint. I couldn't help but fall head over heels for Phedra and her incredible bravery. I listened to all three parts and now I can't wait to dive into the final three!
