I initially gave the book a four-star rating, but after considering the influence of Malcolm X, I decided to give it five stars. The book is very well-researched and comprehensive, but it lacks the passion and intensity that you can truly feel from Malcolm X's life and persona. It almost has a scholarly feel to it.
I have great admiration and respect for both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. for their dedication to improving the lives of their people. In my opinion, Martin Luther King, Jr. made wiser choices in terms of his mentors (Jesus Christ and Gandhi) and philosophy (peaceful, non-violent confrontation), which ultimately had a more profound and positive impact on his community and America as a whole. If Malcolm X had followed a similar path, his legacy and influence would have been far more positive. Towards the end, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pity for him and the collective loss we experienced due to his choices.
