  • This audiobook offers a fantastic peek behind the curtain, exploring the fascinating origins of my beloved Marvel characters. The author skillfully delves into the epic clash between talented creators and powerful corporations, providing a captivating account of this ongoing battle.
  • When I picked up this book, I was expecting an imaginative account of incredible writers and artists crafting some of the most extraordinary fictional characters ever. However, what I got was a narrative that spanned from 1939 to the present, portraying a gloomy journey. It chronicles the experiences of each writer and artist as they joined Marvel comics with dreams of a promising career, only to find themselves overworked, underpaid, and manipulated by greed-driven corporate owners who dictated their artistic direction. Here's a spoiler alert: nearly every artist who started at Marvel eventually ends up at DC. It's a captivating tale, but as a comic book enthusiast, I can't help but feel sorry for most of the creators I admire. I do recommend reading it, but be prepared for a downer. It's a raw depiction of human nature and the awful things we do to one another in pursuit of money.
  • I absolutely adored it! As someone who is a die-hard fan of Marvel, I was absolutely blown away by the fact that some of the iconic characters, who are adored by millions today, may have never seen the light of day if it wasn't for the sheer determination of those who believed in themselves and the incredible characters and stories they brought to life.
  • I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The narrator did an amazing job and kept me engaged throughout the entire story. Thank you! The original book must have been quite fascinating and maybe a bit frustrating too. I'm grateful to have experienced the audio version since my eyesight has been compromised for a few years, and reading a lengthy book like this would have been difficult. The author clearly has a deep knowledge of Marvel's history, as well as the artists and writers involved. This might not appeal to everyone, but it doesn't come across as a fanzine solely praising the company's positive aspects. There doesn't seem to be any personal attacks or grudges against Stan Lee. His legacy was built by collaborating with those who helped him become who he was. Not everyone does that or even desires to do so, so there's no Stan Lee bashing here. I'm sure his time at Marvel wasn't all smooth sailing. I do feel sorry for Jack, though, as it seems he was often the target of Stan's criticism during his time at Marvel. However, considering the controversies and sweeping changes happening in the comic industry, with government mandated burnings and all, maybe everyone was a bit scared and running around like headless chickens. :-/ Overall, this is a fantastic review of Marvel, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the history of media. Cheers!
  • Reading 'Marvel Comics: The Untold Story' was like solving a puzzle; as I delved into the book, all the scattered pieces gradually fit together, revealing a vivid and comprehensive image. This book is truly remarkable, providing a treasure trove of insights into the expansive Marvel universe.
  • I spent a good few months diving into the extensive Marvel Comics: The Untold Story, and it was totally worth it. By the end, I gained a deeper insight into the behind-the-scenes politics and the influential individuals who shaped the iconic Marvel characters and captivating storylines that I adore. The only downside was that I wished the final section of the book delved into the recent introduction of Marvel movies with the same level of detail as the previous 50 years.
  • I'm not really into comic books, but I decided to give it a shot because a talented author can make any topic engaging. I wanted to learn about the origins of Marvel and the story behind Stan Lee's success. Unfortunately, this book didn't deliver any of that. Instead, it was filled with incessant complaints from individuals with strong left-wing opinions, particularly targeting Stan Lee, without providing any substantial insights. I was hoping for an intriguing narrative about the creative process and the challenges faced in bringing ideas to market, but this book fell short. Instead, it was filled with mundane quotes from 1970s hippies expressing their disdain for anyone who didn't share their beliefs. The storytelling was lacking, and it felt more like a comic book enthusiast listing events without any depth. It was both dull and uninformative. The narrator did an okay job, I've heard him in other books where he didn't bother me. However, in this particular audiobook, his delivery was also uninspiring. But I won't criticize him too much since the content itself was so disappointing.
  • This audiobook offers a fresh perspective on the world of comics. It's truly mind-blowing to discover that Stan the man had minimal involvement in some of these characters. However, it's captivating to learn about the origins of many iconic figures. Right from the start, I was completely engrossed in understanding the birth and inner workings of Marvel. It feels like I'm actually transported to that place. The narrator may come across as a bit dull, but I can't imagine listening to it without him. His voice perfectly captures the essence of the time period, although I can't help but wonder how it would feel with a more enthusiastic narrator. Although this story is not particularly thrilling, it is incredibly informative and serves as a fantastic history lesson for comic enthusiasts. Even after hours of listening, I still crave more and eagerly anticipate a future audiobook that explores the DC side of things.
