Summary

The millennium between the breakup of the western Roman Empire and the Reformation was a long and hugely transformative period-one not easily chronicled within the scope of a few hundred pages. Yet distinguished historian Chris Wickham has taken up the challenge in this landmark book, and he succeeds in producing the most riveting account of medieval Europe in a generation.

  • This audiobook would be better suited with the title "Taxation's Vital Role in Medieval Europe." The language used throughout is ambitious and grandiose. Unfortunately, it only briefly covers artistic accomplishments, focusing solely on literature and architecture. Surprisingly, there is no mention of the significant technological progress made during this era, except for the obvious inclusion of the printing press.
  • Listening to the beginning of this book, where Mr. Wickham expressed his frustration with how others have written about the subject of Medieval Europe, was quite interesting. However, his bitterness towards their approach was off-putting. While I appreciate his attempt to present history in a different format, it didn't excuse the confusion and disjointedness of his own book. It felt as though I was sitting through a dull college history lecture. I'm not certain if reading the book instead of listening to it would have made a difference. Wickham's frequent jumps and constant bombardment of names and dates made it difficult to keep up. History should encompass more than just names and dates, but unfortunately, he failed to move beyond this aspect. It became tiresome when he would briefly mention something, only to promise a more detailed discussion in another chapter. To be honest, I couldn't continue beyond the first few chapters. I didn't feel like I was gaining any real insight into the time period, and eventually, I lost interest. The only redeeming aspect of this book was Derek Perkins, who did an excellent job as the narrator. It's a shame that his talents were wasted on this particular book.
  • Although I did gain knowledge from this audiobook, I found myself frequently interrupted by the author's tendency to discuss upcoming topics in the following chapters. This even included references to things that were yet to come within the current chapter I was listening to. I couldn't understand the purpose behind it. It felt completely unnecessary, unless this audiobook was meant to serve as a textbook for a university or high school course. Other than that, the narrator did a commendable job with a pleasant speaking voice and a well-maintained pace.
