Summary

"It's not every day that I'm blown away by a book about a sports figure. But MICHAEL JORDAN: THE LIFE, by Roland Lazenby, ranks up there with the very best: The Boys of Summer by Roger Kahn, Friday Night Lights by Buzz Bissinger, and Joe DiMaggio by Richard Ben Cramer. The depth of reporting, his frequent ascent into poetry, and his intelligent analysis of the life of this complicated, fascinating American icon deserve Pulitzer Prize consideration. For the first time I understand what makes Michael Jordan tick. I was captivated, fascinated and beguiled from beginning to end." -- Peter Golenbock, New York Times-bestselling author of George and In the Country of Brooklyn

  • I found it truly awesome how this book delved into the nitty-gritty details and dissected the factors and surroundings that nurtured the greatness of the iconic figure we now recognize as Michael Jordan.
  • As a massive fan of Jordan, I was already familiar with most of the content in this book. Both the positive aspects and alleged negative aspects. However, the author seems to derive pleasure from focusing on the negative, relying solely on sources that Jordan had a problem with, and vice versa. Some of these "sources" go unnamed, and much of the negative information about his family is always presented as "alleged". Whenever the actual subject is omitted from a book, it's inevitable to feel a sense of disappointment and conflicts arise. The author assumes and speculates far too much, disregarding the fact that Michael himself has publicly addressed and debunked many of these claims. Despite this, I did find enjoyment in learning about his family history and early college years, although even those sections are followed by negative remarks. True Jordan fans understand that he possesses a unique mindset and that it was this very mindset that contributed to his greatness. If he truly was as terrible as portrayed in this book, wouldn't we have heard public criticisms from more of the people mentioned? I acquired this book for free, which provided a decent opportunity to reminisce about the glorious moments of watching Mike and fired me up to revisit old DVDs. Otherwise, I wouldn't spend a single penny on this trashy book.
