Summary
When the luxurious Blue Train arrives at Nice, a guard attempts to wake serene Ruth Kettering from her slumbers. But she will never wake again-for a heavy blow has killed her, disfiguring her features almost beyond recognition. What is more, her precious rubies are missing.
I've been on a binge reading all the Hercule Poirot books in sequence and having a blast! While Hermitage is my preferred Poirot narrator, Fraser really saved the day when the Hermitage well ran dry.
I couldn't get through it, but I'm hopeful things will pick up. I usually adore most of her books. Despite this one, I still have a soft spot for Miss Christie.
I absolutely loved this book. Every single one of the books in this series has been absolutely incredible. What I really appreciate is how the author manages to bring the unique personalities of each character to life in all of her books.
Agatha Christie weaves yet another captivating story filled with murder, intrigue, romance, and cunning. It's an absolute delight from beginning to end.
In the previous stories featuring Poirot, the perspective was typically conveyed through the eyes of another character, usually Hastings. However, in "The Mystery of the Blue Train: A Hercule Poirot Mystery," the narrative takes on a more third person omniscient approach. Personally, I enjoyed this shift as it allowed Agatha Christie to provide readers with more information about the case as it unfolded, rather than withholding most of it until the end. I suppose I must acknowledge that maybe I'm getting a bit savvier at detecting the methods employed as well.
This is the first time I've noticed Hugh Fraser stumble a bit while narrating an Agatha Christie story (and I've listened to quite a few)....There are certain characters where he adopts a high-pitched, nasal voice that comes across as somewhat absurd, and it slightly disrupts my immersion in the story. Additionally, it's not one of my preferred mysteries written by her, and this combination brings my rating down from 5 to 4 stars.
Nevertheless, it's still pretty damn good.
