Summary
Chicago Stars quarterback Dean Robillard is the luckiest man in the world. But life in the glory lane has started to pale, and Dean has set off on a cross-country trip to figure out what's gone wrong. When he hits a lonely stretch of Colorado highway, he spies something that will shake up his gilded life in ways he can't imagine. A young woman . . . dressed in a beaver suit.
I have never come across a Susan Elizabeth Phillips book that I didn't enjoy. While I felt that her previous two novels, "Ain't She Sweet" and "Match Me if You Can," didn't quite live up to her earlier stories, "Natural Born Charmer" is a solid offering that will leave you feeling positive, entertained, and content. It's a delightful and fast-paced listen/read that is worth your time.
The audiobook of 'Natural Born Charmer' is an adorable tale filled with enjoyment and romance. The narrator did a commendable job, and the characters were captivating. It's great how Susan Elizabeth Phillips connects the different stories of the "Chicago Stars" series.
Natural Born Charmer, by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, is another classic from the author's extensive collection. As is typical of her novels, the characters in this particular book are flawed, yet endearing. However, I found the characters in this story to be particularly damaged. Both Dean Robillard and Blue Bailey have deeply rooted abandonment issues that make it challenging for them to trust one another and establish a healthy relationship. The majority of the plot revolves around their journey of acknowledging and ultimately overcoming these issues.
Like many of SEP's books, what sets this one apart is not only the central love story, but also the numerous sub-plots. When Dean's parents reconnect, we gain insight into why he carries such emotional baggage. Witnessing their relationship blossom anew proves to be just as captivating as the romance between Dean and Blue. Additionally, the inclusion of an insecure yet lovable half-sister, a well-meaning but cantankerous older woman, and a cast of humorous townspeople adds depth and creates an irresistible read.
Anna Fields's narration of this series continues to be exceptional, enhancing the overall experience. If you have enjoyed Susan Elizabeth Phillips's unique take on romance writing in the past, Natural Born Charmer is definitely a book worth adding to your collection. It's a gripping story that will keep you hooked from start to finish.
Anna Fields is absolutely fantastic, and she even showcases her singing skills! The chemistry between Mrs. Garrison and Blue is absolutely priceless and a highlight of the story. I highly recommend this book; anything written by Suzan Elizabeth Phillips is bound to have you laughing uncontrollably!
I had a lot of things I enjoyed about it, but unfortunately, the presence of fairies and unicorns completely spoiled the experience. It was such a letdown!
This romance novel, 'Natural Born Charmer', may seem like just another one in the genre, but it truly stands out. It has been an absolute delight for the past couple of days. Even though it's currently 2:30 on Monday morning and I have an early meeting at 8:30, I'm determined to finish listening to the remaining 43 minutes. I don't care how tired I might feel tomorrow, even with a grueling 12-hour day ahead. This happens to be the second book I've experienced from this author, and I absolutely adore them. They were recommended to me by one of my all-time favorite authors, Diana Gabaldon, and I can confidently say I'm now a huge fan!
The 'Natural Born Charmer' is an absolute riot - it's packed with so much humor that you'll be in stitches and have tears streaming down your face. Anna Fields is hands down one of the top-notch narrators employed by the service.
Here's my rephrased version:
I gotta say, this book didn't really do it for me. It felt pretty shallow and lacked much of a plot. If you're into reading about characters who are constantly described based on their outfits and the typical story of a tough guy swooping in to save a not-so-pretty, but expectedly in need girl, then it might be up your alley. Personally, I found it quite dull and lost interest pretty quickly.
This book may not be a literary masterpiece, but it's definitely an enjoyable, fun, and sometimes hilarious romantic read. It does have a bit of predictability, especially if you're familiar with the author's previous work like "This Heart of Mine" (which I don't recommend reading too close to this one). However, it still delivers what you expect from this genre: a couple with contrasting personalities who find themselves in humorous situations, work through their personal issues, and ultimately end up together with a happy ending. There are some laughs, quirky supporting characters, and it embodies the essence of an SEP novel.
It's worth noting that this is part of a series featuring football team heroes. These guys may have a tough and muscular exterior, but they have a softer and sweeter side. It's kind of adorable. Just to clarify, you don't have to be a football fan or understand the game to enjoy this contemporary romance, which is a relief. And there are no cliched and unintelligent jocks here.
Our main character is commitment-phobic and perhaps a bit more eccentric than what I typically prefer in a leading lady, but she's an artist, so I'll attribute it to her "artistic temperament."
I decided to purchase this book after listening to the free preview, and it gives a pretty accurate representation of both the narrator's style and the overall tone of the novel. If you find the snippet funny and engaging, chances are you'll enjoy the book as a whole.
