This is one of the best audiobooks I've listened to in a long time. It's a fantastic choice for book club meetings and sparks great discussions. The author's writing is superb, especially considering the challenging and controversial subject matter.
This story is absolutely mind-blowing. I was completely transported to the 1960s in rural North Carolina, feeling like I was right there listening to the firsthand accounts of those who experienced it. The author brilliantly portrays the life of Jane Forrester, a social worker in the 1960s, who steps into her role with no idea of what she's about to face. This adds another layer of intrigue to the story, as Jane is just as shocked as I am by the disturbing truths she uncovers within "the system".
Throughout her time as a social worker, Jane encounters families struggling with poverty, health issues, and mental illness. Her presence in their lives sheds light on the harsh realities faced by young Ivy Hart and her sister, who were completely unaware of the state's program to sterilize mentally ill and epileptic girls without their consent. Both Ivy and Jane are incredibly strong-willed characters, leading completely different lives, yet their paths cross in ways that unknowingly help each other find their own way in life.
What makes this book even more impactful is the fact that it is based on a true situation, as explained in the author's note. Knowing that these events actually happened makes the story all the more heart-wrenching.
The narration of this audiobook is flawless. The narrator does an outstanding job of giving voice to characters of different ages, educational backgrounds, and mental states.
