Summary

If the Marines are "the few, the proud," Recon Marines are the fewest and the proudest. Only one Marine in a hundred qualifies for Recon, charged with working clandestinely, often behind enemy lines. Fick's training begins with a hellish summer at Quantico, after his junior year at Dartmouth, and advances to the pinnacle -- Recon -- four years later, on the eve of war with Iraq. Along the way, he learns to shoot a man a mile away, stays awake for seventy-two hours straight, endures interrogation and torture at the secretive SERE course, learns to swim with Navy SEALs, masters the Eleven Principles of Leadership, and much more.

  • I read Generation Kill a couple times. The first time was in 2005 while I was on my way to Iraq as a Marine NCO. I was stationed aboard the USS Tarawa and it was my only deployment. Since then, I've watched the HBO mini-series multiple times as a way to reminisce. In my opinion, the mini-series provides the best portrayal of that time period, especially because it involved members of 1st Recon. Before reading this book, I had heard about Lt. Fick from others. They described him as a thoughtful leader who was limited by the bureaucracy of the Marine Corps. However, their descriptions didn't include Nathaniel's perspective on Lt. Fick and his role. The last chapter, where Nathaniel shares his feelings of being lost and struggling to move forward, resonated with me and many others who have served. Books like this humanize service members and help bridge the gap between civilians and veterans. I highly recommend that anyone who cares about a veteran they know should read (or listen to, in my case) this book. I plan on passing it on to my girlfriend so she can gain a deeper understanding. I don't know if the author reads reviews, but I would like to express my gratitude and give this book my wholehearted recommendation to anyone who wants to understand the veteran community. Semper Fi.
  • This audiobook actually got me laughing out loud on multiple occasions. The author's narration was top-notch and really brought the story to life. It provides an insightful look into the more intense and challenging aspects of going to war, and I truly appreciate the author's candidness.
  • I had a blast with this one. I'm a big fan of books narrated by the author, and Fick definitely delivers. This is a must-read for anyone interested in leadership and making tough decisions.
  • I had a great time reading this book and listening to the author's firsthand account of leadership in the Marine Corps, as well as his experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq. The narration was excellent, although I do wish that it was available on Kindle for easier access.
  • This audiobook is an excellent narrative, presented with intricate insights straight from the protagonist. It possesses a highly authentic and candid tone, which I found to be immensely enjoyable.
  • Fick has a natural talent for keenly observing and captivatingly recounting stories. I really wish there was a complete version of the audiobook. I couldn't stop listening, even though it didn't always align with what I preferred to hear.
