Summary
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is one of the most electrifying, most admired novels of our time. Set in the bleak confines of a state mental hospital, it's the story of a titanic battle of wills between two unforgetable characters.
While the book does exhibit some sexist undertones by portraying femininity as a sign of weakness, it captivates readers with its numerous intriguing depictions and examinations of sanity and the oppressive nature of society. Personally, as someone who has experienced the scrutiny and judgment of society to the extent of questioning my own sanity in relation to humanity, this book truly resonates with me on a deeply personal level.
Wasn't expecting something amazing
Even though this book was highly recommended and made it to many "best of" lists, I kept putting off reading it because I wasn't a big fan of the movie...But to my surprise, I ended up enjoying the book much more than I anticipated.
While some people see this as a book primarily focused on the mistreatment of the mentally ill, shining a light on the cruelties of electroshock therapy and lobotomy, I found it to be so much more. It delved into the complexities of the human condition in modern democracies, reminding me of other thought-provoking novels like Animal Farm, Catch 22, and Brave New World.
In my opinion, this novel is truly beautiful. I usually try to live without regrets, but I can't help but wish I had read this book many years ago.
The narration was nearly flawless, bringing the writing and characters to life in an exceptional way.
