Summary
In combat, men measure up. Or don't. There are no second chances.
This book is incredibly well-written. You won't be disappointed if you decide to invest your time in it.
Ray Porter's narration is spot-on and truly captures the essence of the story.
The storyline of 'Outlaw Platoon: Heroes, Renegades, Infidels, and the Brotherhood of War in Afghanistan' was excellently written, creating a strong emotional connection with the protagonists. The perspective of the lieutenant as he witnessed the growth of his men was truly inspiring. It accurately portrayed the reality of a young lieutenant depending on experienced and battle-tested sergeants, which reflects the qualities of a commendable commanding officer. My heartfelt blessings go out to the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces.
I've got a huge collection of audiobooks about military service and this one really caught my attention. The narrator is top-notch and does an amazing job nailing the accents and pronunciations. He can even pronounce Chinook correctly! The writing is incredibly detailed and paints a vivid, albeit graphic, picture of what it's like to be an infantryman serving in Afghanistan. It's not always an easy listen, but it's definitely worth every penny to gain insight into the challenges our veterans face while on deployment.
This book and its narration are top-notch. It gives a compelling perspective on the harsh realities of the Afghan war, without the exaggerated machismo and self-promotion that is often present in Navy Seal memoirs and other military non-fiction books that focus on special operations.
This audiobook is filled with absolutely mind-blowing tales, and the narration is top-notch. If you want to dive deeper into the subject, I suggest giving Jocko Willink's podcast episode 192 a listen. Trust me, you won't regret it. I can't recommend this audiobook enough.
A lot of war books tend to highlight the intense fighting in war, and although "Outlaw Platoon" does an exceptional job in portraying this, I feel like that's not the main focus here. What really stands out to me is Sean Parnell's effort to shed light on the mindset required when you are responsible for sending men you deeply care about into battle. In my opinion, he couldn't have expressed this any more effectively.
