Summary
In a masterful standalone thriller by New York Times bestselling author of the Rizzoli & Isles series, Tess Gerritsen, a mother is haunted by a very old piece of music she finds in a strange antique shop in Rome.
Tess Gerritsen's "Playing with Fire: A Novel" breaks away from the usual Rizzoli & Isles detective mystery genre that she is known for. It diverges completely from the Rizzoli and Isles series. In this book, Gerritsen skillfully intertwines the events of fascist Italy during World War II with a modern-day American woman and her family, all centered around a music piece called "Fire." Initially, the story may seem confusing and nonsensical, almost to the point where I was tempted to stop listening after two hours. However, I'm glad that I persevered because it turned out to be a captivating and compelling tale.
Playing with Fire: A Novel offers an intriguing combination of two captivating narratives. The first explores a perplexing mystery that keeps you questioning whether the daughter is plagued by supernatural forces or if the mother's sanity is slipping away. The second storyline delves into a masterfully crafted historical fiction, set against the backdrop of a harrowing period in history.
The conclusion regarding Julia and her daughter was not what I anticipated, leaving a sense of sadness. The inevitable fate of Lorenzo and Laura was sadly apparent. However, the way everything intertwines is truly enchanting and filled with hope. The novel effectively celebrates the unsung heroes amidst tragedy and highlights the presence of goodness in the face of pure evil.
I have read several of Tess Gerritsen's books and have loved them. Not the case with this one. I was throughly disappointed with the plot and I hated the narration.
