Summary
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is a romantic novel first published in 1813. Mr. Bennet has five daughters but no son. His property cannot be inherited by the daughters and is entailed to the next mail relation. Mrs. Bennet wants to marry off her daughters at the earliest. Her eldest daughter is Jane who is the most beautiful young women in the locality. She is sensible but also naive. Her second daughter Elizabeth who is commonly known as Lizzie is 20 years old and is the protagonist in the novel. She is witty and charming but not as beautiful as Jane.Mrs. Bennet becomes excited when Charles Bingley who is a rich bachelor arrives in their neighborhood. They meet at a local ball and Mr. Bingley falls in love with the beautiful Jane Bennet. Mr. Bingley’s even richer friend Fitzwilliam Darcy is attracted to Elizabeth Bennet. However, he does not like the Bennet family and their neighborhood. Elizabeth also finds him arrogant and snobbish. Meanwhile, Mr. Collins who is 25 years old and a cousin to Mr. Bennet arrives. He is a clergyman and the heir to their estate.
Mrs. Bennnet wants Elizabeth to marry Mr. Collins, who turns down the offer, much to the anger of her mother. Elizabeth finds herself attracted to a young officer George Wickham, who does not get along with Fitzwilliam Darcy due to personal reasons. The novel hinges on the importance of a good marriage and marrying for love and not money in the presence of social pressures of making a good and wealthy marriage.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is a clever and witty novel. It describes the societal thinking and the status of the women in society during the early nineteenth century. Elizabeth Bennet with her wit and humor comes across as a highly lovable character and someone with whom the readers relate to. The author develops and complex and tight plot. The detailing of the characters and their complex interconnections is commendable. The audiobook has a sparkling dose of humor and wit which keeps it an easy read and entertaining to the readers.Mrs. Bennet’s desperation for getting her daughters married and the reaction of her daughters and Mr. Bennet has been beautifully depicted. The novel is a literary classic and has received numerous awards and recognition. It remains a timeless classic love story which can be read by readers of any age and categories.
