Summary
When Wednesday Martin first moves to the Upper East Side, she hasn't a clue where she should live, how she should dress, or where her son should go to preschool--or why these things seems so vitally important to her family's social success and happiness. She feels hazed and unwelcome until she begins to look at her environment through the lens of her academic background in anthropology. As she analyzes migration patterns, childrearing practices, fetish objects, physical adornment practices, magical purifying rituals, the demographics of mating, and female bonding, she finds it easier to fit in and even enjoy her new life. Then one day, Wednesday's world is turned upside down, and she finds out there's much more to the women who she's secretly been calling Manhattan Geishas.
I totally dug this book and never once had the feeling that I wanted to stop listening to it. However, I feel like the author tries to do too much at times, and there are moments where more details would have been cool, and others where less would have been better. Nevertheless, it's a solid audiobook to keep you entertained while you're doing chores around the house.
For those who are curious about the ways of New York City and its inhabitants, "Primates of Park Avenue: Adventures Inside the Secret Sisterhood of Manhattan Moms" is a hilariously entertaining, heartwarming and enlightening experience.
Wow, I wouldn't recommend living there at all. Trust me, you don't want to put yourself through all the hardships. This book effectively reveals the dangers and challenges of navigating the wild world of Park Avenue for those who are unfamiliar. Just a friendly piece of advice: stay away from it.
I think it might be a bit over the top, honestly. However, those women on the Upper East Side seem like a whole different breed. But honestly, that doesn't matter. It was a genuinely enjoyable read without any malicious intent. I would definitely suggest it if you're looking for something light and entertaining.
The book was quite captivating and offered fascinating insights. However, at times, the anthropological perspective seemed a bit far-fetched. Nonetheless, the narrator did an excellent job.
This book was absolutely terrible, focusing on truly awful individuals. Just a heads up: if you have experienced the loss of a pregnancy or a child, this book might be distressing. I was incredibly let down by it. I've actually read The Devil Wears Prada before, and I didn't like it either (although the movie was fantastic). However, Primates of Park Avenue takes it to a whole new level of awfulness.
This book is a complete snooze-fest, lacking any exciting plot or engaging content. As someone who typically enjoys similar reads and can be forgiving of lighter literature, I was thoroughly disappointed. It turned out to be an utter time-waster. If you're looking for a well-executed version of the same idea, I suggest saving your time and watching Mean Girls instead.
Being someone who's delved into anthropology, I must say that this book intrigued me. It's a captivating read that doesn't require any prior knowledge, but what I truly relished were the author's insightful observations on the attire of her social circle. While it may lean more towards thought-provoking literature than your typical chick lit, it still loosely falls into that genre.
Initially, I had the impression that this book would be excessively gossipy, similar to The Nanny Diaries. However, as I delved into the final few chapters, I found myself truly engrossed in the narrative.
