Summary
An action-packed and all-too-realistic vision of nations navigating the minefield of international intrigue, Protect and Defend is Vince Flynn's most explosive political thriller yet. The action begins in the heart of Iran, where billions of dollars are being spent on the development of a nuclear program. No longer willing to wait for the international community to stop its neighboring enemy, Israel launches a creative and daring operation that leaves a radioactive tomb in the middle of Iran's second largest city. An outraged Iranian government publicly blames both Israel and the United States and demands retribution. Enter Mitch Rapp, America's top counterterrorism operative. Rapp convinces President Josh Alexander to sign off on a risky operation that will push Iran to the brink of revolution. But when Iran recruits Hezbollah master terrorist Imad Mukhtar, and a CIA effort goes disastrously wrong, Rapp and Mukhtar are set on a collision course that threatens to engulf the entire region in war. With the clock ticking, Rapp is given twenty-four hours, no questions asked, to do whatever it takes to stop Mukhtar, and avert an unthinkable catastrophe.
There's a big difference between what makes a book great and what makes an audiobook great. Some of my favorite novels wouldn't be as enjoyable if I listened to them. However, authors like Orson Scott Card and Vince Flynn really come to life when their books are read well. The narrator perfectly captures the inflection you want from the characters, matching the fast pace during action scenes and the slower, more contemplative pace during decision-making moments. This audiobook fully brings the story to life and truly stands out. If you're someone who listens to audiobooks while driving, be careful! This one is so captivating that you might find yourself glancing down to check your speed during the exciting parts ;)
In the beginning of this book, Mitch Rapp is given the opportunity to seek revenge against the treacherous Stu Garrett. Even after two years, Rapp is still deeply affected by the loss of his wife Anna Rielly.
The central focus of the story revolves around a conflict between the United States and Iran. One important takeaway from the book is the grave error of kidnapping Rapp's mentor and CIA director, Irene Kennedy.
Similar to all of Vince Flynn's works, "Protect and Defend" is a multi-layered narrative that is delivered with the trademark clarity that only Vince Flynn could accomplish. It is an exceptional novel that is wonderfully narrated by George Guidall.
I haven't gotten around to reading any of Vince Flynn's books before because the first time I listened to one, I immediately fell in love with Mitch Rapp's voice. Thanks to the incredible performances by Mr. Guidall and Mr. Schultz, they have truly become the voice of Mitch. As for this particular book, "Protect and Defend," I must say it's even better than its predecessors. I can't help but wish our military possessed the same skills and abilities as our honorable protagonist Mitch. Overall, it's an exceptional book with a fantastic narrator.
