Summary

Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers is a romance novel with its story in the 1850s in the gold rush California. The protagonists of the story are Sarah (commonly referred to as Angel) and Michael Hosea. Angel lives a dark life with a socially unacceptable profession. She was sold as a child in the world of prostitution. She was an illegitimate child and was rejected by her father. She becomes filled with hatred and vengeance especially towards men, who always use her leave her hollow and deathly from within.

Micheal Hosey seeks his father’s guidance and heart in everything he does. He did not think ever that he will find the love of his life in a brothel. Michael follows God’s guidance and obeys to ask Angel to be his wife and love her without any prejudice or conditions. He rescues her from her dark and gloomy world. He understands that Angel is hardened and has built internal defenses against men and the outer world.

Slowly, with his love, he starts addressing her apprehensions and Angle’s heart starts softening and melting in response to Michael’s love. However, with the passage of time Angel starts feeling unworthy and runs away from her husband to her previous dark world. Michael realizes that Angel must give her heart to someone who loves her more than him then only she can be in a position to give her heart to Michael.

Francine Rivers is an incredible writer. She presents a captivating idea in this book and starts off strongly. (Spoilers ahead) However, the constant back and forth of the main character becomes monotonous. Moreover, the intimate relationship between the main character and Paul feels unnecessary and doesn't contribute positively to the story. I understand the concept of forgiveness, but Michael could have forgiven them without being involved with them. Michael's continued friendship with Paul only weakens him and made me dislike Paul even more. Paul's behavior is so terrible that it's impossible to like or support him. The relationship between Miriam and Michael is unbelievable. Firstly, she is too young, even for the 1800s, and secondly, it's frustrating that the group didn't have a simple conversation to address the issue. By the time Sarah/Angel/Mara/Amanda/Mandy/whatever her name is, leaves with Duke after the fire, I had lost interest. The message of the story would have been better conveyed through smarter and more likable characters making biblical decisions in a less absurd manner. If this is your first Francine Rivers book, don't give up. This is just one of her older works. I recommend reading "The Masterpiece" to fully appreciate the incredible talent of this author.

As someone who doesn't have much time for reading these days due to the digital life we lead, I decided to give audiobooks a try while at work. I stumbled upon a review of this particular book online and felt compelled to give it a shot, especially since I am a believer in Jesus. The story portrayed in this book is truly beautiful and showcases the immense love and care that God has for all of us, as well as his willingness to save sinners and those who are lost. I never expected to enjoy a Christian romance novel, as I usually prefer steamy romances. But let me tell you, this book was absolutely incredible, filled with passion! It wasn't preachy at all. In a way, God is just another character in this heart-wrenching story. I tried so hard to fight back tears, especially toward the end, but I couldn't help it. I had to pull over and wipe my eyes. The book is filled with grief, redemption, and joy. It's an amazing story that captivated me from start to finish. It's not a light-hearted listen, and at times it even got quite depressing. However, the writing was so well-done and the characters felt so authentic that I couldn't stop listening. I can't even count how many times I wished I could jump into the book to have a conversation with Angel, give Michael a hug, give his brother a good slap, take down a bad guy, or help someone in need. I can understand why it has such high ratings from so many people. And the ending is truly satisfying. I highly recommend it to all romance fans, not just those in the Christian community.

I wouldn't say this is a book I'd repeatedly go back to, but not because of the writing (which is fantastic). Francine Rivers truly brings the characters to life with her descriptions, evoking a range of emotions such as anger, frustration, sadness, and anticipation. It was hard for me to tear myself away from the story, even though it's a hefty 17 hours long! I caught myself listening while cooking dinner or sitting in front of the TV with my husband. The book stirred up intense feelings within me, and I appreciate Rivers for tackling such powerful themes. I'll definitely be recommending it to others, although I'll warn them to brace themselves for a life-altering experience. As for the narrator, she was alright. Not the greatest. Her tone remained fairly consistent throughout the entire book, which didn't always align with the storyline.

I was utterly let down and repulsed by 'Redeeming Love,' a monotonous, cliché romance book that feels as if it belongs in a bargain bin. It attempts to mix explicit scenes with religious undertones, resulting in a distasteful combination.

A bunch of people suggested this book to me, so obviously, I'm just adding another opinion to the mix. Most folks seem to adore this book. Personally, I found the main character to be annoying as hell for at least the first half, maybe even longer. It's a sad story but ultimately about redemption, and I gave it two stars (instead of one) because I actually managed to finish it, despite quitting a few times. I even ended up caring about the characters, but it took some effort on my part. I found it hard to believe on many levels and it felt like the same stuff was being repeated over and over. The book could easily be half the length. The writing just didn't captivate me. But hey, plenty of others loved it, so it's all a matter of personal taste. This one's just not my thing.

This book really reminded me that no matter what I've been through, God still loves me. It also taught me how to embrace love from others, even if I feel unworthy of it. It was an incredibly powerful and emotional read that reaffirmed my faith and brought so much joy. The way the author crafted the story beautifully captured the true essence of our relationship with God. It was truly amazing, and I can't thank them enough for this experience.

I couldn't make up my mind whether the problem was with the narration or the book itself. Ultimately, I concluded that both were lacking. The narrator's performance fell flat, lacking any emotions or distinct voices for different characters. Every word she spoke carried a sense of "grave importance." The book, on the other hand, felt excessively drawn-out, dragging on and on. It could have easily been half its length. If I had a physical copy, I would have skipped to the end to discover the outcome and promptly abandoned it. As it was, I half-heartedly listened to lengthy monologues that explained events I already knew about and their significance. The character development was tediously slow, causing me to lose interest halfway through. The supporting characters felt one-dimensional, and the religious references seemed forced. Overall, it was a disappointing audiobook that I definitely would not recommend.

Generally, I'm not a fan of Christian fiction. I find most of it to be lacking in substance, poorly written, and clichéd, with a weak emphasis on spirituality. However, Francine Rivers proves to be an exception to the norm in the genre, as she is a beloved author and a bestseller in Christian fiction. Prior to her transformation, she had a successful career writing steamy historical romances. But after encountering Jesus Christ, her life took a different direction, which also influenced her writing. After a three-year hiatus, she received a divine vision for her first Christian novel - a reimagining of the book of Hosea, set in the 1850s during the California gold rush. The story revolves around a righteous man who seeks God's will, and the prostitute whom God places in his life as his wife. Rivers excels in her adaptation, crafting well-developed characters who are flawed yet relatable. The themes of love, forgiveness, grace, mercy, judgment, and redemption are all expertly explored. If I have one criticism, it's that the book felt overly long. With some tighter editing, it could have been more concise and less repetitive. However, this might just be a personal preference. As for the audiobook experience, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to "Redeeming Love." The narrator, Kate Forbes, did an excellent job in bringing the story to life.

I've had 'Redeeming Love' sitting on my bookshelf for ages. Literally years. My friends kept raving about how amazing and life-changing it was, urging me to read it. I tried to get into it a few times, but it never really grabbed me. That's when I thought, maybe listening to it would be a better idea. The story takes place in the mid-1800s and follows the life of Sara, a happy young child living with her mother. Her biological father would occasionally visit, but it was clear he resented Sara's presence. He wanted her mother's undivided attention and eventually cast them aside, leaving Sara vulnerable to molesters and criminals. Fast forward about 10 years, Sara, now known as 'Angel,' finds herself working as a high-priced prostitute in a brothel. She's filled with anger and bitterness, yet her beauty is undeniable. Enter Michael, who hears a divine calling to marry Sara and bring her back home. Michael does just that, and thus begins a tumultuous relationship as he tries to break down the walls that Angel has built from years of abuse and abandonment. Guided by his faith and the scriptures, Michael refuses to give up on his new wife. But Sara struggles to accept love and trust any man. 'Redeeming Love' is a captivating story, particularly for fans of Christian fiction. However, my issue with it was the writing style felt too simplistic and the story became repetitive. Plus, it was quite predictable. Perhaps younger readers, especially those who enjoy Christian fiction, might find it more appealing. The narration was well done, but overall, I found the story to be unnecessarily lengthy. As someone who isn't particularly fond of romance, I might be a bit jaded. While I'm glad I finally gave 'Redeeming Love' a listen, I don't think I'll revisit it or seek out similar stories in the future. A solid 3-star read.

Maya Angelou’s Book ‘Letter to My Daughter’ helped me find such acceptance of myself, in such clarity that no other book helped me find. A book that had tremendously helped with my faith was Francine Rivers’ Redeeming Love. Not any of the books from the notable evangel names.

I recommend Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. I was recently given this book to read & its phenomenal. It has more of a fiction twist to it, but the way the author bases it off a story in the Bible is so pure to read & figuring out what Gods love is really like in any situation.
