Summary
Alastair Reynolds's critically acclaimed Revelation Space redefines the space opera with a staggering journey across vast gulfs of time and space to confront the very nature of reality itself.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. When I decided to give this audiobook a try, my intention was to find a science fiction story that leaned more towards hard science rather than the Star Trek style (although I do enjoy Star Trek). I had expected it to be a bit dry with all the intricate details, but I was proven wrong. It definitely left me wanting more... :)
For those seeking a science fiction novel that combines a healthy dose of scientific details (with lots of intricate information in some areas), futuristic elements, and a thrilling sense of suspense, this audiobook is a great choice. However, it is worth mentioning that the target audience for this book should be on the mature side, as it contains graphic and dark elements, though nothing too extreme. It could easily be adapted into an R-rated movie, offering incredible opportunities for stunning space scenes and CGI effects.
The author skillfully provides just enough details and foreshadowing to maintain suspense without becoming predictable, truly keeping you on the edge of your seat. The story is incredibly immersive, and I eagerly anticipate diving further into the world with "Revelation Ark."
As a huge fan of science fiction, I had high hopes for this series (with this book being its first installment) and anticipated many enjoyable listening hours. Regrettably, I was immensely let down and couldn't even bring myself to finish it. It's difficult for me to accurately assess the book itself due to the abysmal narrator.
1. The narrator fails to provide distinct voices for each character, creating confusion and making it challenging to discern who is speaking.
2. Additionally, there is a lack of pauses or indicators when transitioning between settings, time periods, or locations. The book swiftly jumps between vastly different scenarios, and the reader plows through the text without any breaks. Coupled with the absence of distinctive character voices, this often led to me listening for extended periods, only to realize that a significant shift had occurred several paragraphs ago, leaving me with an inaccurate mental picture of the events. Consequently, I found myself disoriented and lost throughout most of the story, resulting in an unpleasant listening experience.
Unfortunately, because of this, I won't be attempting any other audiobooks by Alastair Reynolds.
If you're into Peter F. Hamilton, then you're definitely going to dig this book and its sequels, "Redemption Ark" and "Absolution Gap," along with the prequels "The Perfect" and "Chasm City."
"Revelation Space" kicks off with three separate storylines that eventually come together in a brilliant way, a signature move by Reynolds.
Set in the year 2524 on the planet Resurgam, which is considered a bit of a remote outpost in human space, we meet Dan Sylveste, an archaeologist and leader of the colony. He's also from a wealthy scientific family. Sylveste and his team are busy excavating the remains of the Amarantin, an ancient civilization that vanished 900,000 years ago. Just as a violent dust storm threatens to halt their progress, Sylveste stumbles upon evidence that the entire Amarantin race was wiped out in a mysterious cataclysm. Interestingly, this event coincides with the Amarantin's advancements in space exploration.
Meanwhile, Sylveste and the crew of the Nostalgia for Infinity are headed towards Cerberus. It's during this journey that Sylveste realizes that Cerberus isn't actually a planet but a massive technological beacon. Its purpose? To alert machine intelligences, known as the Inhibitors, about the emergence of new star-faring civilizations. Unfortunately, it was this very beacon that sealed the fate of the Amarantin.
As suspenseful as it sounds, this novel is one hell of a ride!
John Lee is a wonderfully brilliant narrator..
He gets into the characters persona of the book with with ease and is always consistent with the individual attributes of each character..
Sometimes the otherworldly deep brush accents can be a tiny bit hard to understand but lends quite well to what you would think a character would sound like as if you were standing in the room the action is happening..
