  • This audiobook tells an incredible tale of courage and sacrifice during one of the early battles in Afghanistan. The action takes place on Takur Ghar, a towering mountain standing at a staggering 10,400 feet. It's worth noting that this was the highest elevation our soldiers have ever fought on in the history of our nation. While the story does involve some heartbreaking events that befall our brave soldiers, it remains a compelling choice for military history enthusiasts. I highly recommend it. Furthermore, Joe Barrett's narration is excellent, adding to the overall experience.
  • I first came across this book through a fellow Veteran who served in the United States Military. Let me tell you, this book is absolutely captivating. The way the author describes the events on the mountain is incredibly immersive. You can truly feel the pain experienced by those who were injured and the heartbreak of watching their brothers suffer. As you follow the US Army Rangers up the mountain, you'll almost feel the bullets zipping past your ears and flying over your head. Personally, I found myself getting frustrated with the lack of clear communication between Headquarters and the soldiers on the ground. It made me wonder why there wasn't a sense of urgency to rescue the Navy SEALs. War is an absolute nightmare. The loss of life during this battle saddens me, but I'm grateful that it wasn't even worse. As I always say, any injury is too much, and any loss of life is devastating. Overall, this book is truly outstanding and I wholeheartedly recommend it to every American.
  • MacPherson does a fantastic job of recounting the intense battle on Takur Ghar in great detail. The book primarily focuses on a 17-hour mission and the subsequent rescue during Operation Anaconda, which makes for a gripping and adrenaline-pumping read. One aspect that sets MacPherson apart is his ability to keep the story neutral and avoid any personal or political biases. This is a commendable quality that resonates with fans of Mark Bowden's writing style, such as in "Blackhawk Down". MacPherson's writing is clear, detailed, and provides enough background information to bring the characters to life. It's worth mentioning the lower ratings given by those who find it hard to believe that events like this still occur in today's military. Sadly, not much has changed since the failed 1980 Operation Eagle Claw. It's frustrating to see power-hungry "Academy" graduates running JSOC as a means to further their own careers, rather than being the ones who should be leading our best warriors on the ground.
  • Great first-hand account of the heroism of our soldiers at war. Brings to light the struggle of man and technology as we continually try to strive to advance our capabilities on the battlefield. Shows the heroism of all of our troops especially those involved in the battle of takur ghar.
