Summary

Pulitzer Prize winner John Sandford began his #1 New York Times best-selling series with this riveting novel that floored critics and fellow novelists alike. "So chilling that you're almost afraid to turn the pages," hailed Carl Hiassen, while Robert B. Parker praised the "cop and a killer you will remember for a long, long time." The "maddog" murderer who is terrorizing the Twin Cities is two things: insane and extremely intelligent. He kills for the pleasure of it and thoroughly enjoys placing elaborate obstacles to keep police befuddled. Each clever move he makes is another point of pride. But when the brilliant Lieutenant Lucas Davenport--a dedicated cop and a serial killer's worst nightmare--is brought in to take up the investigation, the maddog suddenly has an adversary worthy of his genius.

  • I reckon Rules of Prey was a solid read, and Sandford sure knows how to spin a tale. But let me tell ya, listening to the audio version is a whole different ball game. The excessive profanity in the audio book really grated on my ears. Maybe I'll stick to reading his books in the future, 'cause I don't think I'll be splurging on another audio book from him.
  • I stumbled upon John Sandford and his Lucas Davenport series quite late in the game, just like some other series I've encountered. However, I managed to snag the first book in the series on sale and decided to give it a go. I must say, it was quite an enjoyable experience. It's not every day you picture Minnesota as a hub for serial killers, but the unique setting added an intriguing twist to the story. After this delightful introduction, I definitely plan on grabbing a few more books in the series before it wraps up.
  • If you're a fan of John Sandford's character, Lucas Davenport, then you'll enjoy this book. It may not be his absolute best work, but it's still quite good. The narrator does a decent job overall (although he struggles a bit with female voices), but ultimately, it's the story itself that shines in this book. I must admit, as a long-time Davenport fan, this is the first time I've listened to one of his books rather than reading it. The character of "Mad Dog" isn't just your typical one-dimensional villain; he's portrayed with depth and comes across as genuinely gruesome, intelligent, and seriously terrifying. He serves as a fantastic contrast to Davenport, who is an unconventional cop in many ways. Without giving too much away, I can say that Davenport is depicted with intriguing flaws and unique strengths, both of which are skillfully utilized in this gripping story.
