Summary
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult comes a compelling and disturbing novel about a prep school teacher accused of rape by a group of young girls, the woman who stands by him, and the repercussions of the case in a small, New England town where the past is only a heartbeat away.Love can redeem a man...but secrets and lies can condemn him. A handsome stranger comes to the sleepy New England town of Salem Falls in hopes of burying his past: Once a teacher at a girls' prep school, Jack St. Bride was destroyed when a student's crush sparked a powder keg of accusation. Now, washing dishes for Addie Peabody at the Do-Or-Diner, he slips quietly into his new routine, and Addie finds this unassuming man fitting easily inside her heart. But amid the rustic calm of Salem Falls, a quartet of teenage girls harbor dark secrets-and they maliciously target Jack with a shattering allegation. Now, at the center of a modern-day witch hunt, Jack is forced once again to proclaim his innocence: to a town searching for answers, to a justice system where truth becomes a slippery concept written in shades of gray, and to the woman who has come to love him.
I struggled to get into the story at first, but once I became invested, it turned out to be quite compelling. The book features numerous well-developed characters and a complex backstory. The trial's outcome surprised me (won't spoil it), but the very end left me frustrated. My suspicions arose after the lab results, but they were never addressed. Near the end, there was a hint, but it was once again ignored. I feel like there should be a sequel to tie up loose ends. Despite this, I would still recommend the book. While I have enjoyed other works by this author more, overall, it was a worthwhile read.
I've just started reading 'Salem Falls' and I'm enjoying it so far. The narration is excellent (thankfully, as I've had some bad experiences with the narration in previous Picoult audiobooks). The plot follows the classic Picoult style and is engaging and straightforward, although a bit predictable. Nevertheless, it's the narrator who truly elevates this audiobook. Spoiler Alert: I figured out the ending as soon as the Attorney began delving into Jillian's account of the alleged rape. The final chapter didn't catch me off guard.
I absolutely adored listening to this book and was thrilled every time I had the chance to turn on my device and keep going. The story is fantastic, the language is superb, and the performance is top-notch. As a result, I ended up purchasing several more books by this author.
The way the narrator portrays the female characters in 'Salem Falls' is reminiscent of aging flappers. And can we talk about how quickly Jack becomes the target of a teenager? It's like something out of a cheesy Hallmark movie. Honestly, I expected more from Jodi Picoult, who is known for her excellent writing. This particular book doesn't quite live up to her usual brilliance.
The narrator really nailed it with their performance in 'Salem Falls'. Once again, Picoult has delivered a captivating book that you won't be able to put down! I'm excited to dive into another New Hampshire mystery that peels back the layers to reveal the truth about small towns.
You absolutely need to read all of her books. They transport you to another place and give you a true sense of the vastness of the world and the countless stories being crafted by others.
