I can't help but wonder how Tom Wright manages to have such a deep understanding of Jesus and the church, while also adhering to various man-made traditions, rules, and rituals. It's puzzling how he justifies practices like infant baptism or denies immersion as the proper mode. Additionally, he seems to accept many ideas from the Reformation that were originally devised by the Roman church to control people and money. Where in the new covenant does it grant authority to clergy and laity, reverends, titles, sprinkling, tithes, grand buildings serving as temples with altars, high priest attire, and the promotion of doctrines crafted by humans but claimed to be God's word? Perhaps it's better to reject everything that came after the first century and simply follow Jesus!
I'm a huge fan of N.T. Wright and have read most of his works. However, I believe "Simply Jesus" is his most straightforward book on Christology. Despite having explored Jesus and his ministry in books like "The Challenge of Jesus," "Jesus and the Victory of God," and "When God became King," Wright manages to add fresh insights in this concise read. This is a book that I will definitely revisit multiple times. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to deepen their understanding of Jesus, his ministry, and his life, death, and resurrection. It's a thought-provoking book that challenges both newcomers to Jesus' story and long-time followers.
The narration is exceptional. The narrator's voice gives the impression that you're actually listening to Wright himself, as if you're having a cozy chat over a cup of coffee or tea in Wright's case.
The book takes you on a ride, as you explore the depths of Jesus and start pondering new and diverse questions. It's like going on a journey of discipleship.
