I haven't heard an audio book this good in ten years! Jesmyn Ward is an incredible writer, her writing is stunning and this narrative is profound and gut-wrenching. Ward tells a tale about the devastating consequences of individuals who are shattered, but somehow captures their essence as human beings. The performances by the narrators were absolutely fantastic!
Jesmyn Ward's writing in "Sing, Unburied, Sing: A Novel" exudes the same beauty as Faulkner and Morrison. The story strikes a delicate balance between reality and the fantastical, seamlessly blending the two. In fact, the fantastical elements serve to accentuate the authenticity of the rest of the narrative.
At its core, the story revolves around a struggling family determined to endure and stick together. While the themes explored in the book possess a timeless quality, there is no doubt that the story is firmly rooted in the harsh realities of our present day.
The decision to employ multiple narrators was a stroke of brilliance. Rutina Wesley skillfully voices the chapters seen through Leonie's perspective, while Kelvin Harrison and Chris Chalk bring the male characters to life in their respective chapters. Each narrator's immense talent contributes to a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience.
This audiobook was absolutely fantastic! The story and the performance were top-notch. I can't recommend it enough. It had me laughing, shedding tears, and even shaking my head in disbelief. The writing was truly beautiful.
