Summary

Rainn Wilson's memoir about growing up geeky and finally finding his place in comedy, faith, and life. For nine seasons Rainn Wilson played Dwight Schrute, everyone's favorite work nemesis and beet farmer. Viewers of The Office fell in love with the character and grew to love the actor who played him even more. Rainn founded a website and media company, SoulPancake, that eventually became a bestselling book of the same name. He also started a hilarious Twitter feed (sample tweet: I'm not on Facebook is the new I don't even own a TV) that now has more than four million followers. Now, he's ready to tell his own story and explain how he came up with his incredibly unique sense of humor and perspective on life. He explains how he grew up bone-numbingly nerdy before there was even a modicum of cool attached to the word. The Bassoon King chronicles his journey from nerd to drama geek (the highest rung on the vast, pimply ladder of high school losers), his years of mild debauchery and struggles as a young actor in New York, his many adventures and insights about The Office, and finally, Wilson's achievement of success and satisfaction, both in his career and spiritually, reconnecting with the artistic and creative values of the Bahá'í faith he grew up in.From the Hardcover edition.

  • I was pleasantly surprised by this book, it exceeded my expectations! The author is truly talented in both writing and storytelling. I gained a wealth of knowledge about "The Office" through his captivating narrative.
  • Rainn Wilson is an absolute wizard of a person. He manages to be absolutely hilarious without ever crossing the line into stupidity or being offensive. He's got a spiritual side, but he never comes across as preachy or condescending. And the best part? He's totally relatable, never pretending like he's had a better or worse life than anyone else on this planet. In "The Bassoon King: My Life in Art, Faith, and Idiocy," he not only shares his own wisdom, but also drops some serious knowledge from others as well. It's like he's leaving breadcrumbs for us to continue the conversation long after the book ends. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by how much this book entertained me, but even more so by how much it enriched me. And let me tell you, listening to Rainn Wilson himself read "The Bassoon King" takes the experience to a whole new level. It's hands down the best way to experience this incredible story.
  • I never expected to enjoy this book as much as I actually did. It covers a wide range of topics, from the author's childhood in Central America, his experience with the Baha'i religion, to his time in New York City during the 70s and 80s, delving into the lives of bohemians and even exploring the intricacies of office dynamics. It's truly a fantastic read.
  • I was genuinely taken aback by how much I genuinely enjoyed reading this book. I guess I was expecting it to be filled with stories about Rainn Wilson being exactly like Dwight Schrute or something. However, Rainn's observations about life and faith had me laughing to myself quite frequently, all while eagerly anticipating what would come next. It was also surprising to discover that we are actually quite close in age and that many of his experiences during adolescence were similar to my own. I was also intrigued to find that our perspectives and thoughts on various matters were strikingly similar to Mr. Wilson's musings. After completing this book, I can honestly say that Rainn Wilson is someone I would absolutely love to sit down and have a conversation with over lunch (preferably authentic sushi)! Well done, Rainn. Thanks! Kurt
  • Rainn definitely knows how to spin a good tale and his creativity shines through in his book, "The Bassoon King: My Life in Art, Faith, and Idiocy." Personally, I found his anecdotes about his experiences on The Office to be particularly enjoyable. One aspect of the book that stood out to me was the significant amount of attention given to Rainn's Baha'i faith. It was intriguing to learn about his perspective on this spiritual belief. However, I must admit that there were moments when it seemed like Rainn expressed some unorthodox opinions, which could be considered heretical. It is my hope that he eventually reconsiders his stance and recognizes Jesus Christ as the one true God.
  • I really enjoyed the beginning of this book, it was captivating, hilarious, and filled with some great anecdotes. However, around the halfway point, it took a turn towards being overly focused on religious preaching and spirituality. It wasn't really my cup of tea. I believe everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, but I don't appreciate when there's a condescending tone towards those who think differently.
