Summary
Most of us believe that we will finally feel satisfied and content with our lives when we get the good news we have been waiting for, find a healthy relationship, or achieve one of our personal goals. However, this rarely happens. Good fortune is often followed by negative emotions that overtake us and result in destructive behaviors. "I don't deserve this," "this is too good to be true," or any number of harmful thought patterns prevent us from experiencing the joy and satisfaction we have earned. Sound familiar? This is what New York Times bestselling author Gay Hendricks calls the Upper Limit Problem, a negative emotional reaction that occurs when anything positive enters our lives. The Upper Limit Problem not only prevents happiness, but it actually stops us from achieving our goals. It is the ultimate life roadblock.
Listening to this audiobook was like tuning in to one of those motivational speakers who aim to inspire you to become a successful salesperson or make heaps of money. It was heavy on motivational enthusiasm but lacked substantial facts and concrete information. The author, an academic, employs persuasive language and rhetoric to make his arguments. He attempts to convince you that anecdotes can serve as substitutes for hard data. Throughout the book, he shares numerous stories of how he assisted his well-known clients or patients in overcoming their challenges (seriously, what about doctor-patient confidentiality?). I'm not suggesting that his approach might not be effective for some individuals, but I can't help but feel that the overall tone of the presentation and the absence of concrete data made it feel more like a sales pitch than an informative piece.
My friend put me onto this book and let me tell you, I'm so damn glad I took her advice. This book is straight up revolutionary. I mean, I could feel it from the get-go, within the first five minutes. And halfway through, it's like my whole damn life started to shift. It's something I'll forever be grateful for.
He's totally fixated on his own ego. He spends the whole time boasting about how humble he is, bragging about the countless amazing opportunities he's rejected... all in the name of humility! Haha! Save your money and don't contribute to his inflated ego or bank account by purchasing this book. There are far more genuine messengers out there, like Pema Chodron or Eckhart Tolle, for instance.
