Summary

When the crash of the U.S. stock market became public knowledge in the fall of 2008, it was already old news. The real crash, the silent crash, had taken place over the previous year, in bizarre feeder markets where the sun doesn't shine, and the SEC doesn't dare, or bother, to tread: the bond and real estate derivative markets where geeks invent impenetrable securities to profit from the misery of lower and middle-class Americans who can't pay their debts. The smart people who understood what was or might be happening were paralyzed by hope and fear; in any case, they weren't talking.

  • The storytelling and narration in "The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine" were phenomenal, but I have to admit that I didn't grasp everything as well as I did when reading Michio Kaku's book on parallel universes. Surprisingly, I knew nothing about both subjects beforehand. Considering the immense popularity of "The Big Short," it seems like many people have a better understanding of financial instruments than I do, and it makes me realize the need to brush up on my knowledge in this area. The book primarily focused on the process that led to the global financial crisis, with relatively less emphasis on the personal stories of the individuals involved.
  • This book is an absolute blast, filled with humor and entertainment. Not only did it meet my expectations, but it exceeded them. It offers a deep dive into the complexities of the sub-prime meltdown, exploring both the technical aspects and the individuals involved. Despite its historical nature, it manages to captivate readers by incorporating elements of finance, personal stories, politics, and the human experience. Whether you're intrigued by the meltdown itself or simply fascinated by the few individuals who predicted it, this book is an essential read.
  • If you're clueless about why the financial markets went belly up, this book will shed some light. Even if you're already well-versed in CDSs and CDOs, you'll be captivated by the first-hand accounts from those who witnessed and took part in the chaos. And if you're a fan of Lewis, this won't let you down.
