Summary
Confidence. We want it. We need it. But it can be maddeningly enigmatic and out of reach. The authors of the New York Times bestseller Womenomics deconstruct this essential, elusive, and misunderstood quality and offer a blueprint for bringing more of it into our lives.
This book is a must-read for all women! It's incredibly well-written, extensively researched, and the narration is on point. Katty and Claire have really put in the effort, digging deep into the reasons behind women struggling with confidence and offering practical solutions to transform it.
This audiobook was quite challenging to listen to because it begins with some inaccurate information about women's suffrage and portrays a controversial figure as a positive influence, which felt uncomfortable.
As a devoted reader, I had high hopes for this book, so maybe the negative review isn't applicable to the average person. However, for those who are well-educated and driven to succeed, it proved to be a waste of time.
The authors take us on their personal journey as they delve into the issue of women lacking confidence compared to men. They conduct interviews with women to gather evidence. Personally, I would have preferred to focus on exceptional cases, with the goal of learning from their habits, tools, or adopting better mindsets. But maybe that's just my preference.
Ultimately, the book concludes with a call to action. It essentially states, "Now that you know women are inherently less confident than men (which the entire book tirelessly tries to convince us of), you should do something about it." That's it.
Overall, I was extremely let down by this book.
There are definitely some valid points in this book, but it's a bit frustrating how it constantly feels the need to compare women to men when talking about positive traits.
I was really impressed with the extensive research put into this book, and the narrator's delivery was excellent and clear. However, there were a few aspects that caught my attention:
1) Most of the interviews featured in the book were with famous and highly successful women. While I understand the intention was to inspire, I personally would have liked to hear from more ordinary women who have faced insecurities and built up their confidence in their respective fields. It felt a bit alienating to me.
2) As a white person, I couldn't help but notice the lack of interviews with women of color. The book seemed to primarily focus on whiteness, and I would have appreciated a more inclusive approach.
3) The book briefly touches on how confidence is developed in childhood, but I would have loved to see a more in-depth exploration of this topic. Towards the end, there were some intriguing points that were addressed too briefly, leaving me wishing for a deeper exploration and more guidance on working through these issues.
Overall, if you're new to books about confidence, this is a good starting point. However, personally, I felt it fell short of my expectations. It's important to recognize that different women may have different perspectives on it. I did enjoy it though!
I have no issues with the book itself or the narrator, but the service app lacks chapter or subsection titles. Additionally, the chapters do not match the section numbers in the navigation, making it extremely challenging to keep track of your progress and navigate through the book. Overall, it's a frustrating experience.
I was expecting more guidance on how to boost confidence, like a clear-cut formula. Instead, the authors delve into extensive research on various influences such as genetics and upbringing that shape confidence levels. However, I'm glad I continued reading because chapter 6 provided some valuable insights. Chapter 7, in particular, should be mandatory for parents as the authors offer exceptional advice on nurturing confidence and self-belief in children.
The initial four chapters of this book delved into the scientific aspects, while the latter half honed in on providing practical and actionable guidance.
This book is a must-read for men who want to gain a deeper understanding of the women in their lives. Whether it's at home, work, or raising strong and confident daughters, 'The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance - What Women Should Know' offers valuable insights.
